Boise Police officer Derek Whipps was shot three times with a handgun after stopping a vehicle at about 11:10 a.m. Saturday near Ustick and Curtis roads in Boise. According to Interim Police Chief Jim Tibbs, Whipps was wearing a bullet-proof vest, but one bullet entered his shoulder.

Tibbs said the officer's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening and Whipps was in stable condition at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center Saturday afternoon.
Boise and Idaho state police said the shooting suspect is 28-year-old Juventino Torres-Vargas.
Police report the suspect entered a home at Pamona and Esquire in Boise and are attempting to negotiate. Roads close to the scene of the shooting are closed. Police tracked the suspect to the home after his car was found abandoned at Curtis and Cole roads.
Police said Torres-Vargas is wanted in connection with an armed robbery earlier Saturday. He is also wanted for aggravated battery in connection with a shooting earlier this week of his common-law wife, police said.

Juventino Torres-Vargas, 28 is described as 5-foot-10-inches tall, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.
