Why don't OUR beaches look like this?

It probably is Israel. Its pretty common for a "kitah" or squad to do that and let one guy just stand there and guard instead of ruining everyone's fun.
Gotta love a place where every tenth person is carrying a full auto.
 
Each one is a little personalized. After going through basic training, advanced training, and combat with a rifle I would assume they know all the little dings, dents, and scratches that make their rifles their's. I've also heard of guys wrapping their dog tags on their weapons when they do stuff like that. Most of the time they make these little "waffle" structures by stacking their rifles two by two. They do it by numerical order, (count-off-numbers) and then they take them off starting from the top in opposite order.
 
I recall one glorious Med cruise of my youth, when, as a young sailor, I spent five great days of liberty in Haifa ... being as the beaches were free (and we were usually pretty broke), and that's where we knew we'd see women, we spent lots of time at one particular beach.

Sometime later in the afternoons, groups of young women, members of the IDF, would show up, stack up their rifles, and strip off their green fatigues ... seemed as though they all had the same black bathing suits ...

Something about Israeli women, black bikinis, and automatic weapons that always kinda turned me on ...

Reminds me of the video of a young soldier, rifle slung on his back, hitching a ride (and getting one!) on a main road. Dude's just walking along with his thumb out; some gal pulls over and lets him in, they drive off.

I'm betting their emergency operators don't get calls that begin with "he's got a gun!" in that neck of the woods.

Funny But...

Yet Israel has some of the strictist gun laws in the world. I doubt too many American gunowners would want to live in a country that only allows people who served in the military to own firearms. That would piss off alot off keyboard commandos.

Yeah, but since almost everyone serves where is the problem?

Israelis have yet to discover the shotgun. I've seen them used for riot control and for Brinks type money pick-ups. Other than that no one has them. For the most part the weapons are being used in defense against terrorists on highways and such at medium distances so shotguns arn't ideal. further-more they get retired military weapons from the army and shotguns haven't really changed that much lately and therefore don't get retired.
