Why get a Marlin 39A?

Put them both to your shoulder. The Henry's stock has a lot more drop than the Marlin.

I like to get my cheek firmly on the stock. If I do that with the Henry, I can't see the sights. My 39A lines up perfectly.

NGa.Mtnhunter That is phtography at its finest.....! Nice Marlin ! Nice Tree Rats! Now I want Dumplings! :p

Nice 39 Dewalt-2 ........... Hope there is someone special to fill your shoes for another 44 years......( not to rush though ) :)

Also:
The Henry is a neat little gun for a good price. I like them too!

Its kinda like apples and apples...There are great eating apples and then there are cooking apples!
You can eat and cook with both, just things turn out different : ) Not bad just different!

I got my 39A around 1985.
Found out I can't stand lever guns.
Stuck it in the basement for 20 years.
Moved to florida
Took it out and shot it.
Found out I still don't like lever guns.

Those 39's hate to just sit around and not be shot. Since we're close to each other I'd be happy to have it over here and I'll take it out shooting for you. It's all in the best interest of the gun, you won't even have to supply the ammo because I just want to make sure that it stays happy. :D:evil::D

I bought my Winchester 9422XTR when I turned 18. Six years ago I gave it to my son before he got married. I'm looking at a Marlin 39A at the local pawn shop. I think it wants me to take it home one day REAL soon! I have always considered the 9422 as the .22 lever-gun with looks and the 39A as the one with the legacy of durability; THE claw-hammer of .22 lever action rifles! Also, lever-action .22's aren't as fussy when it comes to feeding various weights and brands of ammo like some semi-auto .22 rifles ( which I also own ) are.

Marlin vs Henry

I think the Marlin feels more substantial. I bought my wife a .22 Henry for Christmas. She originally wanted a Winchester until she found out they were made in Japan. We went to G.M. and looked at all types of lever guns, and I immediately liked the Marlin over all the rest because the stock felt better. The other rifles felt OK, but too much like BB guns to me. She on the other hand liked it even more than my Ruger 10/22 so...she is the proud owner of a Henry lever gun. It's a nice little gun but when I get my first lever gun it will be a Marlin (chambered in .357).

"A few years ago I bought a Henry 22 "

I've had my Golden 39-A Mountie for 47 years. It works like it's new. The Henry is pretty much new and untested compared to the Marlin. The Marlin 39 line has been made for more than 100 years.

The Henry uses a zinc/aluminum alloy receiver cover instead of a traditional machined steel receiver. And the gold receiver covers were once described as made of the same stuff as gold-toned bathroom faucets. Not bad, just not right for a gun.

You asked.

I take it you wouldn't spend more than $2000 on a Cooper bolt action .22 LR. They're really nice and very accurate.
