DAUPHIN ISLAND -- A police officer shot a man twice in the stomach Monday evening after a scuffle on the boardwalk of the town's public beach.
The man, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, was airlifted by LifeFlight-Mobile to University of South Alabama Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery late Monday, said John Tyson Jr., Mobile County district attorney.
Dauphin Island Police Chief George Goodwin said that investigators believed the man was from Mobile. He said the man had a small black gun but he was not sure the caliber.
Tyson said the shooting appeared to be justified. He said the man, who witnesses described as intoxicated, had pulled a gun, which he used to strike the officer in the head.
The district attorney said the events began about 5:20 p.m. with two Dauphin Island police officers responding to 1509 Bienville St. Beachgoers had reported that the man was acting in an unruly manner, Tyson said.
According to Tyson, the officers separated, each approaching the beach on separate boardwalks. When one officer encountered the man on the boardwalk, the man pointed a gun directly at the officer, Tyson said.
The district attorney said that during the fight that followed, the officer jammed his finger into the barrel of the man's gun to cause it to malfunction. The officer then grabbed his own weapon and shot the man, Tyson said. ,
The other officer who had run over to help and seven other people witnessed the shooting, according to the district attorney.
Tyson said that after the shooting, the man continued to fight until he was subdued by paramedics who took him to the Dauphin Island Airport, where he was picked up by the LifeFlight helicopter.
Witnesses, who gathered after the shooting still in their swimsuits and towels, declined to speak with a Press-Register reporter.
