Why Is This Forum So Heavily Moderated?

Bill T, I have also noted the way you've posted on other forums. I can assure you, we are nowhere near as tolerant as those forums, and I can understand that you feel a bit "chafed" by our restrictions here. However, if you want to be a part of the High Road, those restrictions are just something you'll have to learn to live with. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

I don't find them heavy here at all, and have never felt at risk of being banned. I've participated in some threads that ended up closed, but oh well...

It's actually pretty easy to avoid banning. Just follow the same rules of civil conduct as in real life. IE no swearing(at least limit it), direct attacks on people, etc... Don't spam, or show complete disregard for the forum topics.

Endless flamewars and trolls don't add to conversations. Go through the debates about the war on drugs and the potential legalizaton of same, and you'll see that the moderators allow alot. You can even see this with the arguments about illegal immigration and the war in Iraq, though it seems there's a large correlation between gun ownership(or at least membership in THR) and our views on them.

I don't always agree with the Moderators here, and there are some that I almost never agree with. But in general, I think they do a good job meeting the mission statement of the The High Road.

This is by far the best gun forum on the net. I appreciate the fact that profanity and vulgarity are censored here.

If you want to see naked girls shooting full auto AK 47s, just use google.

Preacherman,

Thanks! You said it better than I ever could. I guess that is one reason you are a preacher.....and a moderator!
You mods out there, keep up the GOOD work!!

Jim

Speaking of AR-15.com. I was going to purchase a Scherer 25 round extended magazine for my wifes new Glock 21 in .45 ACP. I wasn't sure about them so I asked about them in the Glock handgun forum on AR-15.com. Within minutes I had a bunch of well informed responses telling me in no uncertain terms from guys who have them they are a POS! That saved me $50.00. Sure they used a little rough language in their "description" of the product in question, but I didn't mind a bit. I was happy to get that kind of valuable, first hand information. In another thread the subject of Botach Tactical Supply was brought up. They are a very inexpensive supplier of Glock factory magazines who I almost bought from. I say almost because once again the guys over there saved the day by listing post after post of detailed stories on how they were flat out screwed by them. That type of information is invalueable, and if I have to take a little "rough" language in the process of getting it, so be it. If most any of those posts were made here, the thread would have been blown off the site, and the information along with it. Bill T.

I find the level and quality of moderation to be excellent. It's the free market - choose to go elsewhere.

I've ditched a forum because of the crap on it. Those who like it stay. One should study the cautionary tale of Glocktalk and its clone started by those who ranted and raved. Eventually, the second forum had to throw off its seminal member for ranting and raving  . Then it folded. GT is stil perking along.

On the contrary, Bill - that same information, about both of those issues, has been posted here before in response to inquiries. It's just been posted politely, that's all.

Are you saying the Handguns: Autoloaders forum here isn't just as informative ?

With all due respect, no. Bill T.

If you go to the bar you will hear cussing and the like, you will meet new folks and jerks. Off color discussions, rantings, ravings you will hear it all. As long as you are there spending money and not scaring customers away the bar doesn't care.

This isn't a bar. This is an extension of Olegs world. In his house there are rules. In his house you you are expected to act with restraint and common courtesy when presented with opinions you disagree with.

This is a family friendly board. If you cannot express yourself in a manner that isn't appropriate when in the presence of other peoples children then don't post.

What is so hard to understand about The High Road?

Let's not over react. No one is talking about, "Ranting and raving". When I visit any forum I moderate what I do and don't want to look at. I've been on several forums that have had threads break down into personal attacks. I just don't bother. On the other hand I've visited topics and had them locked off when they were getting interesting. I guess this breaks down into censorship pure and simple. Some like to choose what to look at. Others like to have it done for them. Bill T.

Please cite the evidence that swearing and talking dirty improves the quality of the information about guns. That seems to be your thesis.

Following Preacherman's erudite explanation of our mod' policy - I would add the inevitable caveat - ''it is impossible to please all the people - all of the time."

Bottom line is and has to be - if folks come here and join up - and do not like what they see or the moderation policy - then it seems to me this board is not for them. I count THR as one of the premier gun boards but there are others - plenty. It has to be a matter of choice where you reside and read and post - little different IMO from making your free choice on which TV channels you choose.

It's that simple :)

So I'm sorta getting the feelin' that BillT's real objection is the fact that foul language and personal attacks aren't allowed here?
Sure they used a little rough language in their "description" of the product in question, but I didn't mind a bit.
My personal feeling is that if you feel the need to use the F-word in every other sentence you speak or write (as some on AR-15.com seem to feel), I feel disinclined to share your company, be it in person or on the internet. Repetitive, routine foul language doesn't have any place in grown-ups' communication.

OK, now I'm confused, Bill.

If you've got a forum that you like, where you're comfortable with the moderators and their policies, and where you get solid information, then why would you waste your time going to some other forum and telling people there how they should behave or what they should accept?

Please cite the evidence that swearing and talking dirty improves the quality of the information about guns.

Where did I ever say it did?? I simply stated it didn't bother me. Bill T.

the only thing that bothers me is there is not "Quote" button after each reply

its a pain to type brackets around someones reply

:cuss: :p

'cause you're on private property, and what the boss says goes.

If you don't like how it's run, get yourself a server and vBulletin software and start your own. :)
