I know the 686 is the darling of the series, but I just really like blue guns. A S&W just looks better to me blue. It seems the 586 doesn't get any recognition. I have one and it shhots and looks great, and it can be had for under $400. You can shoot full house .357 in it all day with the factory stocks.

I have a 586 and love it. I matches my 16-4 with combat grips. I personally think the 586 with the full underlug is the nicest look Smith ever made but then again I like any quality made revolver.

Because so many shooters have been brainwashed into thinking it has to be stainless steel.

My best shooting bud recently stumbed on a deal on a 586,( after owning a 686 for years) and likely wouldn't sell/trade it for anything.

If I had the opportunity, I would choose the 586 over a 686. Does that answer your question?

A nickel 6 in 586 is on my list. Maybe have a blued 7 shot cylinder fitted and put some dark Badger grips on it.

How is this for a 586, picked it up a couple years ago. Has been refinished by Mag-na port. Their mag-na-life finish.

I carried an early - first run - 581 as a duty gun in the Border Patrol some years ago. (1981 or so as I recall.) The only modification I contemplated and never made was to grind off that silly under lug. It was and is a truly fine fighting handgun. It prints to the sights with Winchester Silvertip 145 grain 357 Magnum ammo.

I still prefer blued guns to stainless. I still don't like non-wood grips.

I'll have to get my camera situation fixed and I'll post a picture.

I personally would LOVE to have one! 6 inch please, one of those "under $400" models would be just fine. My brother has one just like the one Walkalong posted, and I need one too.

I carried a 586 for several years, then had it hard chromed,,shot great with it too. That under lug weight was a good ballance for full house 357 loads. I really liked this as a duty gun.

S&W has a M586 L-Comp in their catalog but it will cost you plenty. They are special run Performance Center revolvers available through Camfour. This one is a 7 round .357 Magnum with a 3" barrel and Altamont Rosewood grips. Very nice!!

My 4" 586 is the oldest member of my collection in terms of date of purchase.
I still regularly shoot it. Thoroughly enjoyable gun.
