and elderly who can not rack the slide on the smaller guns? Is it because it is too weak in design for that size cartridge in a pocket gun. Beretta does make one in a 32 called the Tomcat.

Yes , I know, but the Cheetah is not a pocket pistol..

It is a good house gun for the ladies and elderly, who do not want a lot of recoil, but at 23-25 oz it is not a pocket gun.

oh yeah, the model 86. I think they still do, or might... seems to be hard to come by. It is supposed to shoot really nice. Problem is it has the same limitations of the model 84, in that it is much larger than most other .380's, not very pocket freindly.

I carried the thing and it was barely noticeable, if at all. If you are searching for a true "pocket" pistol in .380 tip up barrel that is effective and can carry any amount of ammo besides 1 round - well be sure and let me know when you find IT. ;)

Why not?
Because the price and size of American made .380 pocket pistols has all but killed off the market for imported .380's. Beretta did make a .380 with tip up bbl but it was never a big seller.

The GCA '68 limits the size and importability of handguns and it's impossible for Beretta, Glock, HK, etc to import guns the size of a Ruger LCP.

dogtown Tom, I understand that , but what about U.S ..

companies that are not restrained by the import restrictions, such as S&W , Ruger , and others who make pocket pistols, Keltec, Kahr, NAA, You have not really answered the question at all. I think it would be a good idea and it would sell, judging by the remarks and complaints concerning the "racking of the slide" in such small 380 pocket pistols by women and the elderly.

We are talking "POCKET PISTOL" the Beretta model 86

at 24 oz and 7" long can hardly be considered a pocket gun. The reason the model 86 did not sell was probably because no one needs a TIP-UP gun that large because a small woman or elderly person has very little trouble racking the slide on most 380 pistols in that size range to begin with.

Well, yeah I DID answer the question snooperman:

Ruger, S&W, Kahr, etc can't make their pocket sized .380 fast enough. Why would they want to add a model or design that didn't sell very well for Beretta?
Manufacturing a blowback .380 with a tip up barrel is a HUGE step backward for a gunmaker. (And I don't believe that a locked breech/recoil operated design would even allow for a "tip up" barrel.)

The reason Beretta came out with a tip up model had nothing to do with the size of the gun but because blowback semi autos have a very strong recoil spring.
The Model 86 was not considered a large .380 when it first came out.....but by todays standards it is. It was a poor seller then, still is today.

In these small pistols The Beretta in 32 is close to a 380. Its not all FPS and FTLBS. it also where you place the bullet.

Their good ammo out their today for the 32 . Even 32 ball better than a unbrella.
All over the world people use a 32 for SD but in America land of huge cars and if doesn't start with a 4 I won't carry. 32 is looked down on.

.

Yes, I can buy into this explanation much better now..

Thanks for the info, sounds logical. Making a blowback in that small a package is probably going to be very heavy in recoil too.

If you do a search on the Tomcat you may find some problems exist with it. I bought my wife a FEG in .32 because of the problems cited with the Tomcat. I agree that, especially for women, and the elderly, a tip-up .380 is a great idea. Just make it reliable and inexpensive.
