Wife thinking about CCW. Looking for suggestions...

I teach a ladies class once a week and many ladies come in looking for a CCW piece.

I try to get them hands on experience with the different trigger types that are out there and explain there features.

I usually have them try these guns:
Glock 17/19/34 (or Springfield XD)
Sig P2022 or 226 (CZ75 or Beretta 92 are good substitutes)
Springfield 9mm 1911 (or some kind of 9mm 1911)

From there we decide with trigger type works best for them and their application.
Some people want a safety lever, some want no frills or anything to remember, some people like the DA/SA concept, etc.

Once we have the trigger type sorted, we move to a smaller example of the trigger type in question.

If SAO, then we look at Springfield EMP's and Sig P238's
Strikers: Glock 42/43, 19, 26 (or XD equivalents)
DA/SA: Sig P239, CZ75 PCR/Compact, CZ Rami, etc.

I like to start with the larger framed guns to keep recoil manageable and get the basics of shooting down.

Most of the women who have shot our Kahr K9 here have enjoyed it. The stainless frame gives it a nice heft, and rubber grips make it easy to hang onto. It feels like a much bigger gun than it is. Downside for carry is that it is heavy.

i would add the walther ccp. not an overly small pistol, but compact enough to not be difficult to carry.

FWIW, my wife carries of Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm compact. Female friend carries a Glock 19. Sister in law carries either a S&W Shield or a Browning Hi Power. Best of luck in the search.

I'll throw out the Springfield EMP in the 4" version; in 9MM, it's large enough to shoot easily, and light enough to carry. In .40, with a steel frame, it shoots even easier, but is a bit more weight to pack all day. Either one will have a nice, 1911 style trigger, enough barrel to reduce muzzle flip and a slim grip with a slightly shorter reach, front to back of the grip, than a standard 1911. I really love mine in 9MM. Shoots well, too; these were my first 9 rounds out of the gun-

On the 1911 topic. She owns one and shoots it very well. However, she can sometimes get stumped on simple things ( things that most of us may take for granted). Last time out, the mag wasn't fully locked in place (inserted under a closed slide) and I had to help her out. Obviously, she needs more frequent range time.
But, she has already decided that she would not be comfortable carrying a 1911 type pistol. Doesn't like cocked & locked, trigger too light for stressful situation, full size is just too big.

This may sound kinda cruddy, but my wife isn't the most mechanically oriented person. She works in an office environment. This is one reason I want revolvers to be included in the search. She will choose whatever she wants.. I just want all options open to her.

This will take some time... And she hasn't talked about it lately... Fickle she is..

My wife prefers a 32 H&R magnum Undercoverette by Charter Arms. It is a decent SD caliber. It doesn't hurt her bad wrists. It is draw, aim, squeeze, bang. My daughter prefers it too. I feel that it's a perfect handgun for a "non gun" person. They are both good shots with it.

So I'll offer my experience, take it for what it's worth. First, I also shoot a full size 1911 the best of any platform I have tried. As for CCW, I have carried:

Bersa 380CC
Taurus TCP 380
Bersa UC45
Kahr CW9
Ruger SR9C

Long story short, I have settled on the Taurus TCP carried either in the pocket or at 4 o'clock (IWB or OWB). While the TCP is not my favorite pistol, nor do I shoot it the best, it conceals in anything I wear, accuracy is consistent and acceptable and the grip is large enough to handle and small enough to conceal. I would like to try the LCP2, but I have sold the TCP twice and had to buy another, as the replacement hasn't fit as well, so I'll wait until I can add the lcp and not have to replace my current pistol.

Is this gun still in production? It sounds like it could bebe strong contender.

With cocked and locked making her feel uncomfortable that takes the 938 off the table, although when I am looking for deep concealment my 938 is my go to. IF she wants to try one I suggest the rubber gripped model for carry. The wooden gripped ones are beautiful pieces and shoot well but don't handle as well IMO. I am talking from the carry angle, rather than a range gun.

Coming from a 1911 I would think the trigger will have to be good or I would think she won't like it much.

Double stack, my P229 SAS is my carry when I am don't worry about trashing a good gun. (then its a glock 19) With minor lovin the SRT trigger is sweet.

A bit smaller and single stack P225. Again the SRT trigger after a 1000 round trigger job is something to love.

My 76 year old mother fell in love with both of these when she ran them so I can vouch for one woman that likes them :).

For the minor size differences I could never see a need to drop to a 380 from a good baby 9mm.
