According to the news, the poor wild animals that had to be shot in Ohio were shot with "High powered scopes" unquote.

so scopes can kill now?

damn, and hear I am wasting my $$ and time filling out paperwork in buying guns.

So...the scopes are actually firing the ammo? Or, the scopes are the ammo? -sigh- today's media and the "journalist" who report the news.

It's obvious, if you shine a bright flashlight in the objective end of the scope, it will focus the light and make a powerful laser beam out the other end!

Seriously, anyone know what the Ohio deputies used to down the exotic animals?

Such needless loss, beautiful animals killed because of a tragic episode, though I agree with Jack Hanna that it had to be done. I wonder what weapons the officers used. I saw one report of them using their sidearms, but I question the validity of this.

Nowadays, more officers seem to be outfitted with AR-15s rather than 12 ga. Of the two, I would want a 12 ga with most of these animals, except maybe the monkeys. Anyone heard of reports of what weapons the officers used? I wonder if some of the officers didn't resort to personally owned high-powered rifles in lieu of their AR-15s. But I haven't found that info yet.

I heard/saw that phrase, too. It was on Fox News, though I don't remember who was doing the reading (of the prompter.) I was in a McDonald's when I saw it, and they had the CC subtitles enabled. The phrase was also included in them.

They weren't exactly wild animals either...

how do they know they were killing black bears from the preserve and not just actual wild black bears?

I was watching ABC news when it was going on and the chief of police said " My officers were forced to take down the animals with their sidearms"

So they're taking big game animals with pistols now? I'd like to know what caliber lol because i know they're not carrying .454's and 500S&W's

Later they also commented that they used high power rifles as well, which make more sense.

But im sure they were in for a rude awakening when they fired their 40 S&W Glocks into an African Lion

It's amazing to me that the authorities knew about this long-escalating situation, and expected something like this to occur...but weren't bright enough to stock up on some tranquilizer darts and guns...or even initially respond with rifles.

You'd think if there was a crazy guy with a lot of potentially deadly wild animals in your area and your deputies have gone there more than once, you'd plan on a few contingencies...

IMHO, the LEOs failure to plan ahead lead to the deaths of those animals; regardless of the legal situation, which could also have prevented this whole tragedy.

According to one source (Fox News I think, but am not sure) there was a vet present who had a tranq rifle and used it on a tiger, but the tiger reacted violently and had to be shot with a rifle anyway.
These tranq guns apparantly aren't foolproof; the animal may not react as we think they should, or the drug may take too long to put the animal under and in the meantime, go ballistic.-
It isn't an exact science & with people around, it is dangerous.
I don't blame the authorities for using real guns, but I do mourn the deaths of all those animals.

It isn't an exact science

Actually, it is a very exact science. The type and amount of tranquilizer is of utmost importance. Big boys need more juice to go down; too much juice and they never get up. Too little, and... well, that's what happened.

Yep. Exactly like people. Too little and they go crazy, too much and they go dead.

I feel bad for the animals. That being said I think its funny how people of this day and age flip out when they realize they suddenly arent at the top of the food chain.

.

Most patrol officers have either a shotgun or AR15 rifle (some use Mini-14's), many have both. SWAT or their like will have .308's bolt action rifles and others.

Unless SWAT got out there right away I would assume they would be using their patrol rifles (AR15s), shotguns and handguns.

I really wouldn't want to go after a Bengal Tiger, bear or lion with a AR15. I'd say the shotgun with a slug would be your best bet. However, you if you were far enough away you could use the AR15 and hope you put enough rounds into the animal before it turns you into a meal or runs away and hurts someone else.

Jack Hanna said it takes 45 mins for tranquilizer to fully set in. That's too much time & too many animals too close to night fall for that. Firearms had to be used in this situation.
Maybe can get the job done on the wolf (I heard there was one), cheetah and monkeys with sidearms/ar's.... and lions, tigers, bears with shotguns (?)

What makes me sick is all the commenters on those stories blaming the police for not "capturing" the animals. Are you really going to try and chase down deadly animals while night is closing in fast?? It is more like a time bomb, gotta get rid of it asap.

Too bad for the animals. If this had to happen I wish it had happened during daylight hours. Maybe then there could have been a possibility of using the tranqulizer guns.

Either the press was being boneheaded again, or they carefully screened each and every animal for colon polyps right before shooting them.

I've seen many reports that the former owner went to prison for "unregistered firearms." The fact that they were NFA full autos appears only a few reports. So once again we have the myth perpetrated by the MSM that firearms in general must be registered.
