Authorities say horses in upstate South Carolina have been injured and killed by boars. This is highly unusual.

"GREENVILLE, S.C. (WYFF) - Wild boars are responsible for a rash of horse attacks across the Upstate, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The joint investigation by several law enforcement agencies in the Upstate all concluded based on the evidence that the horse attacks are results of altercations with wild boars in the area."

You would think that a horse's defenses of being able to run and kick and general agility would make these things less of a threat.

In an open setting.....likely so. But if a horse is unable to see/detect a hog begin its attack (read hidden by brush, foliage, etc) then I would expect the hog to be successful every time. For those unaware....a healthy feral hog can go from zero to full speed in about 3-4 leaps (no kidding). They are incredibly fast over short distances.

If a horse were even curious and allowed a hog to get too close....same thing, it would not be able to outrun or avoid the hog over a short distance.
