I want to buy some Chip McCormick mags with pads as these have worked well in my .45 ACP 1911's. Does anyone know if the 38 Super mag will work with 9x19 cartridges?

Thanks,

Super mags

Howdy John,

The answer is....maybe. The difference between the two rounds is the
overall length. The Super is long enough to keep from having a problem in the magazine, but the 9mm could present a few. The mags that I've seen with 9mms have a removeable spacer in the back, along with a slightly modified follower and a shorter spring, though I'm pretty sure I've seen some that have a welded spacer. Metalform makes magazines for every 1911 combo imagineable. Give'em a call and see if they'll sell a few spacers and the matching followers and springs. The alternative is to just order some magazines from'em that already work with the 9mm round.
That would probably be about as cheap as buying the guts to modify the
.38 Super magazines.

Luck!

I have four CMC .38 Super magazines that I use in my Colt 1991A1 9mm.
They all feed 9mm hardball reliably and I use them to get to 10+1 for IDPA ESP. The one I bought first to test the idea feeds JHP, one of the other three doesn't, I haven't tried the others.

The rear spacers in my Colt and Metalform 9mm magazines are retained by three or more pairs of crimps. I don't know how you would add a spacer to an existing magazine and keep it in place. Or why. If you want a 9mm magazine, get Metalform. They make the conventional type with rear spacer and a newer "front ramp" designed for Springfield that has a crease down the front edge to hold the rounds to the rear of the lips. Both types are 9 round capacity, I don't know if that matters to you.

Do the metalform mags come with a pad? I ask because I have found I get more postive mag insertion when shooting IDPA with a pad.

I am using the CMC 10-rd shooting star mags in .38S in my 9mm STI Trojan. So far, zero problems feeding standard 9mm ammo. YMMV.
