Since Wingmasters are only chambered for 2 3/4" shells, will other more modern 870 barrels fit it?

Sort of. Express barrels use an internal ratchet to lock the end cap while Wingmaster barrels use a ball detent. So the barrels interchange, but there is no lock on the end cap. You just have to tighten it up and hope it stays on.

I think if you put an Express barrel on a Wingmaster you may go to hell for it.

LOL I knew something like that was coming. I'm just wondering about putting a short HD barrel on a bird Wingmaster so it can double for HD duty when not in the field. A 28/30" barrel is not exactly wieldly for HD, IMO.

You'd have to have really old Wingmaster for it not to chamber 3" shells. They have been 2 3/4" and 3" for at least 20 years.

The only potential problem would be if you have a Wingmaster designed for the "Light Contour" barrel the wood on the fore end may be a little tight to fit on the thicker standard or Express barrels. You could easily sand a bit of wood from the fore end if it is too tight.

You can use a express barrel on a wingmaster with no problem. I have a '72 wingmaster that takes 2.75" shells with an express barrel that takes 2.75" and 3" shells and use it for trap. I've never had a problem.

Thanks for the replies. It's a 2.75" only (old but in good shape).

The Remington factory part for adding sling swivels to your gun--the cap comes set up for both the old ball detent and new rachet spring retainer systems.

That's good to know, but it won't put a detent ball in the Express barrel nor install a ratchet in the Wingmaster magazine. :(

They made older Express 12ga with the ball detent system and I have two new 870 express guns that came with a 2 shot extension from the factory which use the detent system as well... so they do make the express barrels with that system still, but I never see a good description on anyone's website on which type of barrel it's made for...

Maybe he wants a rifled barrel. Are there rifled barrels available for the Wingmaster?
