Simple quesiton i hope. Can't decide if i want to Sell my Ruger Mark I with 4 inch barrel and buy a Ruger Mark 3 with a 5.5 inch barrel, with the one purpose of improving accuracy. Aware of the differences with slide release and number of rounds in magazine.

Would the barrel length make a difference to a olympic class shooter. Can barely hit broad side of a barm without a scope or red dot myself. Terrible shooter. Have always made better shots with a longer barrel. Just Cheap and hate to spend much money on a 22lr.

Thanks.

Barrel length, provided that it is long enough to stabilize the bullet, has no effect on accuracy. The longer sight radius is what makes precision shooting easier. Place an optic on top and both would br equally accurate.

The 5.5 inch is a heavier contour, which may help you to hold the gun steadier on target, and an extra inch of sighting radius is more forgiving of errors in alignment. But both of these factors are more to help the shooter than the gun, to which it makes no real difference.

The 5.5 inch barrel balances much nicer in the hand and is easier to shoot. If you want a real tack driver, get a Government model.....chris3

Several of the indoor ranges around fort worth area and weatherford will not allow reloads. Of course you can buy reloaded ammo from them, called re-Manufactured. Consequently I am forced to shoot 22 LR . Refused to buy ammo at gun range. Also a milage and petro thing, my club range is 40 miles each way, other ranges are 22,26 and 35 miles each way. I do have a range near, six miles, but they are always crowded and venting of air is not the best. I have COPD and often walk away coughing.

Always something it seems. Need to win lotto build my own indoor private range.

If you have a MkI, you should not sell it, as it probably works perfectly.

A Heavy Barrel Mk3 with a longer sight radius might give you higher scores.
But I most certainly would not sell or trade a MkI to find out.

They don't make them like that any more!
I sold a 1950 Standard 4" black eagle years ago and have regretted it ever since.

Why would anyone what to reload 22 ammo? My 4 inch Ruger is an original model, pre Mk1. It was made in 1957 and still shoots perfectly. A 4 inch barrel Ruger will make you pay more attention to shooting mechanics than a longer barrel because of the sight radius. I installed a set of Millet sights on mine....chris3

That would be correct. Barrel length does affect velocity however which can minutely affect accuracy. At the ranges you'll most likely be shooting a .22 pistol at, however, it probably won't make any real difference. Nowhere near as much as something like sight radius and the balance of the weapon.

:) don't think anyone mentioned reloading 22 ammo. As far as new sights, after my cataract surgery I find i do better if i remove the rear sight. Without a red dot all i can do is point and shoot.

I find that the heavier the barrel the better I shoot. I have a MK II with a 10 inch bull barrel and a Millett red dot. I have to try and miss now.:D Also have the same thing with a 6 inch bull barrel. It shoots well but is not as consistent when I shoot for timed events.

yes i have been looking at the Pac-Lite and Volquartsen replacement uppers. Dummy here found a mark I 6 inch upper in Houston few days ago on Texasguntrader dot com, let it pass me by.

I would either buy a replacement upper or buy a mkIII in addition to keeping the older model

If you had a location, someone might knoe where you could rent or borrow a longer Ruger .22 autoloader for comparison, for example in NW Ohio, you could either rent one from a local range (Cleland's outdoor world - Swanton, Ohio) or if you were really nearby you could borrow mine (a 5.5" and a 6.9") at my range as a guest (and I'd try to convince you to join, we need members)

No way I would trade a Mark I for a Mark III.

I've got two Mark IIs, a 5 1/2" BB and a 6 7/8" BB. I can't see any practical difference in accuracy between the two.

My problem and also with most of us old fogies, if I could see the target, I could not see the sights. If I could see the sights I could not see the target. Answer-- Red dot. Solves both problems! It does not care how the barrel is.

Aye,young ones, heed the words of rcmodel for he doth speak the very truth. Truth, hard won through age and sorrow. The bitter sweet draught of regrets' purest distillation even now stains his pallid lips!
Sit at his feet, gaze into those hollow eyes and learn from his error.

The length its self, not ncessarily. But the increased sight radius, thicker less vibrating barrel, and more weight forward might.

Every so often a MK II with a 10" bull barrel will show up for sale. It will be about the same cost as the upper shown above. Then if you want to have the barrel cut to the length wanted. Or buy a 6 inch bull barrel model and be done with it. I also would keep the MK I and buy another, the older ones are really the best ones IMHO.

Red Dot baby. :) I just added a red dot to my Mark i, have yet to be able to test it out. :(

I bought a Mark iii Bull Barrel, it shoots great. Have both I say

I looked at the price for re-blue for the Mark I. Freight both ways to Ruger plus $80 is the cheapest i can find. Sure told me that my next purchase will be stainless.

Sounds like a software problem, to me. I get 2" benched 25 yard groups with the little pocket sized SR22 I just bought. I've always been accurate with small guns, but I shoot a lot with 'em. Great fun plinking at 100 yards on a 14" gong target with a 2" .38 snubby. :D Sight radius limits me, of course, but it seems to limit others worse. I can shoot 3" 25 yard benched groups with my .38 snubby, 1" with my 4" .38/.357s. That's a result of the longer sight radius on those 4" guns. 3" is the limit for my eyes on the snubbies I've shot.

My Mk 2 has a scope on it. I bought it used that way, was going to take the scope off and use it on something else, but it's so bloomin' fun I kept it on that gun, standard 5.5" tapered barrel. It shoots 1" groups from the bench at 50 yards. I have gone to it for squirrel hunting, lighter to carry all day in a shoulder holster than my 10" .22 barreled scoped Contender and danged near as accurate.

2" at 25 yards? You're gonna need to get closer to 2" at 50 yards before you start making any comparisons to a Ruger Mk pistol. Besides, for a 22LR, a group needs to be less than a quarter inch to be "one-hole." :)
