Hello, I am fairly new to Frederick,Maryland and heard that there is a rifle and pistol range in Thurmont. I was told that the only way to become a member is finding someone to sponsor me.

I'm not a member there, but I've visited the club many times and it's a great facility.

Here's a link to their website, and specifically to the membership page. My impression is that you can show up to any of the open events there and simply speak with some members or staff there, and then attend the next meeting.

The process sounds cumbersome and strict, but I've met and shot with some of the nicest people while there.

Good luck.

First: Definately join the MdShooters.com forum.

Second: I am not a member of Thurmont, but I shoot there frequently. Mostly I shoot in the CMP matches there. The last match of 2011 will be held October 29.

If you're interested, that would be a great way for you to check out the range and meet some members. If you don't have a .30 US Service rifle, I can meet you there and lend you one.

As for joining, I think they're pretty full up- not taking new members now, but I could be wrong.

There are other ranges in the area:

Cresap Rifle Club is a public range right outside Frederick. I've never been there, and I understand they're prissy about "rapid fire", but hey, it's available and it's close:

A bit further is Hap Baker, at the Carroll County Dump just outside Westminster.

Again, I've never shot there, but a lot of people swear by it.

I shoot at the Associated Gun Clubs Range on Marriottsville Road:

This is a huge private range, owned by a number of clubs. Costs about $200 or $225 a year. 10 lane 200 yard range with military style pits. 100 lane 100 yard range. 50 lane 50 yard pistol range. Trap and archery. Rapid fire, even full auto is okay. Probably 45 minutes to an hour drive for you, but it's the best range around.

Anyway, join the MdShooters.com forum for lots more local information, and meet me up at Thurmont October 29 for the CMP match.
