Will having a CCW interfere with other background checks?

I just recently got my permit and I'm beginning to think I screwed myself over in terms of future opportunities for other things. In the future if I have to obtain a background check for whatever reason (employment, government clearance, etc) will having a CCW be something that is flagged during the background check? A friend of mine was saying that organiziations often consider you "armed and dangerous" if it is found that you have a permit and will immediately deny you employment/clearance/whatever you were applying for solely based on the possession of a CCW, no matter how squeaky clean your background otherwise is. Any truth to this?

I would think it would be evidence that your local law enforcement organizations trust you, further evidence that you have no criminal background.

I had a summer internship with the department of homeland security over the summer. Their backgrounds checks are VERY thorough. No problem whatsoever with my CCW.

Your friend is mentally challanged.

No a CCW doesn't impact other background checks, at least it was not impact regarding security clearances I required for work

None whatsoever. Your friend is being silly.

I have had (and currently hold) .gov security clearances since 1982. I have held a Type 01 FFL license. I have a TX CHL. No problems.

You should tell him the CCW won't cause problems, but make sure to mention that there has recently been a sale of 32,000 UPS uniforms on eBay. He should watch out for terrorists using them. ;)

I wouldn't think so. If you interview with a rabid anti-gun person, they might look for some other excuse and not hire you, I suppose...but a straight out no-hire based on a concealed carry permit would be illegal.

Of course an employer can require you not to carry when on their property, or on the job, and that's another stinky barrel of dead fish altogether. :scrutiny:

I've seen two of the background checks that have been done on me since getting my permit and neither had any mention of it.

BI's can be required for any number of reasons. I had to have an FBI BI (fingerprint check) run on me when I applied as a part time teacher for our local school district a few years back. This was in spite of the fact that I had had an SSBI while I was in the military. I had another one run on me for my CCW and another one when I joined the PD at Johnson. For most jobs, the extent of the BI will be a credit check and a check of employment references. For some jobs, a full criminal BI will be required, which is basically the same as the fingerprint check you submitted to as part of your CCW application process. I can't see any reason why one BI would be distinguishable from another on your records.

Your friend is full of it. ;)

Your buddy's tin foil hat is tied WAY too tight.

I have gone through several clearances and updates (and been questioned in updates and clearances on many other people) and the CCW thing has never been an issue. I've never had them ask anything about weapons.

I work for a large corporation and do work for other companys that require a background check yearly.. I've never had any problems..

Here's the UPS uniform thing, right where you'd expect to find it:

This friend who thinks having a CCW permit would be a problem definitely has his Fruit-of-the-Looms wound up too tight.

Having a CCW permit means you passed a criminal background check which is a GOOD thing in anyone's eyes.

If that's bad, then I guess my military clearance would have caused trouble as well since that would imply that I am not just trusted to shoot a handgun (as with the CCW permit), but being a military clearance, that would imply that I will go nuts with a maybe a RPG or a .50 caliber machine gun... maybe even a tactical nuclear device.

Hey, you never know....

No, it will not be a problem; I currently have an active TS clearance and went throught the investigation while having a CCW. It made not a lick of difference and in fact, was never even been brought up.

when I was a kid, we were vacationing in vermont, and decided to go to Canada to the Granby zoo. My Mother's CCW permit triggered an extremely rude search of the vehicle in which the border patrol tore the car apart,
and were unable to get all of the carpet and plastic molding to fit it back together properly. lol

That's about all.

:cuss: CCW's ARE NOT ILLEGAL!!!:cuss:

I have an uncle who swears I will get arrested for carrying even though I have a license. I have not had any negative effects with my permit. I'd think it would be against the law to deny employment based on that some one had a "PERMIT" to carry a gun.

That's the Canada i remember, too. One year we went up to visit the grandparents for Christmas and they pulled us over and had us unwrap every gift. And then there was the time we were up there and got stopped at a sobriety check point. He asked me (sticking his face right in the car) if I had been drinking and I told him I had a glass of wine about an hour ago. He let us go on but man, what an over-reaction in my opinion.

Trust me, you don't want to mess with the Canadian law enforcement. The family is planning a reunion up there next summer and I'm still trying to decide whether we are going. Might be the last time because I'm sure not planning to get a passport any time soon.

I have done background check on my employees and unless they do it in other states, there is no mention if you are a CCW or not. I have a service that does a basic criminal Background check (Federal, state, local, and Interpol) and credit history and score. The check usually comes back with any crime that the person commited, with a where and when. The 2nd half is your typical credit history (who you owe money to and how much) with a credit score, it also verifies last know address. Some people might get offended about checking on credit scores, but people who are doing really bad money wise, could be more tempted to steal or commit fraud. I usually do a Google search (never leads to anything good, but you never know), and call the last couple employers (I don't call current employers, I don't want to get the applicant in trouble with their current boss), to verify employment. That is about it.

I can't find out if you have a permit to carry, a Fishing license, or an AARP card. You cannot get the info through regular sources. Try calling the whatever entity in your state that provides CCW, and ask them if you can find out if your neighbor has a permit and see what happens. The only way they can get access is if they are a government agency, and if your getting some sort of high end background check for a position in a government agency, that position would probably be with Law Enforcement or the Military and I bet they either will not care or will be happy that you already have some prior experience with firearms.

With helping my cousin last year fill out job applications for some State and federal Law enforcement positions (Border, Secret Service, FBI) they do want to know how many weapons you own, what the make, model and serial # is and if you have a CCW. He had several guns and a CCW (he graduated with a Criminal Justice degree, and always wanted to be a cop). He had no problems regarding the weapons or the CCW. He chose to go with the Secret Service and now handles counterfeiting & large scale credit card fraud in NYC. When he went for his polygraph they asked him questions about his guns and his CCW, basically seeing if he owned any other guns not on the list, and to see if he ever carried without a permit.

Quite a few CHL holders I know have been singled out for extra "security" by the TSA when flying.

Hoji,

How do they know they are being singled out because CC license?? I fly way to much and other than just after 911 have not had to go through any additional security checks... TSA is federal, if your friends assumptions are correct the states have given the ccw list to Homeland security?? Seems unlikely but I could be wrong.

I have a current DoD clearance and even after a personal interview, there was no mention of my CCW, C&R or what I post on this message board. YMMV.
