I picked up a 1963 Win M70 30-06 featherweight today. I traded a decent field grade M1 for it. It's got a replacement stock on it, but otherwise, the rifle is in fantastic shape.

I'm going to strip the crappy varnish job and see what's under there, but am curious about other options. Would a post 64 stock fit on it? Any thoughts on where I might pick up something?

Thanks.

Post 64 will not fit, accurate innovations rifle stocks makes beautiful stocks for the pre-64 Winchesters, but they are not cheap. Good luck with your rifle.

That is a good looking stock. Remove the barreled action and coat the stock with Easy Off oven cleaner wiping between coats with a 30 grit scotch brite or use Jasco stripper and be done with it in a couple coats (caution wear gloves and eye protection) let it dry and use 80 then 180 then 320 paper on it not increasing any gap around the inletting but knocking down sharp areas ect. Use sanding blocks to keep the edge lines straight. Then clean with some acetone or pure alky and let dry a few minutes. Rub PURE (not blended) TUNG oil into the grain with a towel piece and let dry, Rub it out with 0000 steel wool and repeat process about 4 or 5 times. Gorgeous. Pre 64 featherweight stocks off E bay will fit BTW.

I'd keep it unless it is a poor fit for you. Putting an aftermarket "pre-64" stock won't change it's value - they are easy to spot. I like a nice tung oil finish, that may improve the color.

Thanks. I'm in the process of stripping the heavy varnish off, and it's growing on me.

I've had bad results with Easy Off before; left a layer of dead lifeless wood and it took a ton of sanding to get if off. Real furniture stripper seams a lot more predictable.

Next is to find a nice vintage scope. Maybe a Redfield 2 1/2 or 4 power. And a rear sight.
