I have limited knowledge of optics for rifles. I'm an iron sights guy when I shoot. It is an easier transition from handgun shooting on the rare occasion that I actually shoot a rifle. So, forgive me if this is an idiotic question.

My father in law is having trouble seeing the front sight through the rear notch on his Winchester Model 190. Would a low power scope be a good option for correcting the issue? It is a matter of bad eyes and not a damaged gun. What equipment would we need to actually mount a scope?

Thanks for any help.

It will probably help. It did for my old eyes. I'm not familiar with that model of .22. Does it have a 3/8 inch dovetail on top for scope mounting? If so then you will need a set of .22 rings for a 3/8 dovetail. Lots of choices for an inexpensive scope, but i inch diameter is a good compromise for size and price. I put a Simmons .22 Mag on a couple of my old .22's as they are designed to be a good balance for that size rifle and have been pleased with them so far.

Your Winchester 190 does have a 3/8" grooved receiver designed to fit the Weaver Tip-Off .22 mount.

Many inexpensive scopes will include rings that fit the Weaver Tip-Off grooves.
They just clamp on by tightening the two screws in the rings.

Not recommending this one especially, just showing what to look for.

I would suggest you stay with 4x power or less, as more power limits the feild of view and will make it more difficult for your FIL to get used to using a scope.

I have a Winchester 290, a very similar gun. In your father in law's case, it sounds like a scope or even a red dot sight would be a good solution. The gun has an integral scope mount on it, all you need is a scope and a screwdriver to attach it.
