Winchester 94 Rear Sight Problem

I have a '62 model 94 that I have been unsuccessful in adjusting the rear sight. I have tried to move it by putting a piece of wood on the sight and hammering the wood, and it does not move. I'm afraid to hit it VERY hard.

Question: are the rear sights on ALL model 94s adjustable? If so, what is the best way to unstick mine?

Try spraying it with WD40 and let it soak a while, sounds like it is just gunked up or maybe a little rust holding it, let us know if that doe's it.

If you are trying to adjust for elevation you should be able to just lift the spring loaded rear sight and slide the wedge under to raise or lower it. If you are trying to adjust windage you have to move the front sight. To do that you slide the front sight hood forward and off and lay it aside. Then use a brass punch or a short (3-4 inch) wooden dowel and drift the front sight blade the opposite way that you want to move the point of impact. If you look closely you can see that just the top half inch is what moves. Tap gently so you don't over do it, it is kind of trial and error.

Wood probably won't work. It's too soft and absorbs too much force. Use a brass punch like that other guy said and tap with a hammer with the bare minimum amount of force needed to get it to move.
To adjust windage, move the rear sight the direction you want your groups to move and move the front sight the opposite direction of where you want your groups to move.
So if your rifle is shooting to the left, move the rear sight to the right or move the front sight to the left to get it zeroed.

Don't forget to mark the sight with a pencil or something to give you a reference to see how much you are moving it. It's really not that hard to do as long as you have the right equipment. Good Luck.

You do not need to touch the front sight; you need to drift the rear. If it won't drift, soak it with WD or similar until it will. Use a poly dowel if the wood won't work.

jyeatts, read all the responses then look at your rifle. You will note that the rear sight adjusts for elevation. The front sight adjusts for windage. Take your time.

They make a tool to move the sight when it is mounted in a dove tail.
The brass drift is about the best method other then using the exact tool.
Wood isn't going to do anything.

The rear sight adjusts BOTH Sunday's and elevation. Follow the advice of the others with the exception of the Kidd. His advice is incorrect.

jyeatts, go ahead and Google "model 94 manual" and start reading on page 20. It turns out you can adjust the rear sight for windage. You can also adjust the front sight for windage. If something is going to be off center on such a beautiful rifle wouldn't you prefer it be hidden under the front sight hood?

I've always moved the rear sight for windage, on 94s and several other rifles, but the front can be drifted too.

Re the rear sight, are you tapping the FORWARD BASE of the sight assembly where it's in the barrel's dovetail? If you're beating on any other part of the sight assembly, it probably won't move because you're putting the force in the wrong spot and torquing the base.

Just to make clear, I'm adjusting windage. Yes, I know you can adjust BOTH front and rear sights; however, I want my front sight centered under the hood because it looks strange for the front to be off-center when framed by the hood.
I will try brass punch and let you know the results. Thanks for responses.

I drifted the rear sight completely off my Model 94 and filled the dovetail with a filler made for that purpose. Then I installed one of these Williams receiver sights, for which my gun was already drilled and tapped.

That's awesome GC. No doubt that's a better sight for accuracy; however, I'm trying retain originality on this gun. If I didn't care then I'd put a folding Marble's peep sight on the rear tang . Increasing the distance between front and rear sights should give you better accuracy. Take it EZ.

When I had to go to wearing bifocals, I switched over from an open rear sight to receiver sights or scopes on most of my rifles, except the milsurp collectibles.

Well, I used a steel punch (all I had) and a hammer and finally moved the rear sight. Guess I was just being too gentle with it . No more KY windage for me Thanks for the advice guys.
