I'm considering picking up a Winchester 94 trails end take down in 30-30 with a 20" barrel. Trouble is I would like to have a 16" barrel, would it be more cost effective to take a 20" takedown and shorten the barrel and magazine to 16", or would it be more cost effective to take a 16" and convert it to a takedown?

Thanks,

Much more cost effective to shorten the rifle.

It would be Very expensive to make a take-down out of a receiver & mag tube that wasn't already set up for it.

Thanks, I was looking at the mechanism at the end of the magazine tube and I was concerned it would complicate the affair significantly.

Are there any names that come to mind that could do this kind of work on a takedown lever action?

It shouldn't be that hard. Virtually any gunsmith can shorten and re-crown the barrel. Then the magazine tube can be shortened from the breech end to match the barrel.

I thought that too until I saw how the end of the magazine tube was. It actually would probably be easier to shorten it from the end and put the adapter piece on that allows it to be a takedown.

I'd just like to send it to someone that is more specialized in Winchesters, its an expensive rifle so I just wanna make sure its done right the first time.

rcmodel is right. (No surprise there).

I had a vanilla W94 made into a takedown.
(This was before the revival of takedown availability from the factory).

It's expensive, especially adding the cost for refinishing too.

Much cheaper shortening the barrel and magazine tube.
