I have a Win Arms 94 357 lever action Rifle ser#948xx. Octagon barrel. can any tell me anything about age or value?

Well somethings funky about that serial number.

A Winchester 1894 serial #948xx dates to 1897, and the .357 Magnum was not invented until 1935.

Winchester introduced the first 94 in .357 Mag in about 1990 I think.
By then, the serial # range was over 4,500,000.

will try to post a couple of pics..not sure if it helps but the stamped manufacturer is the Winchester repeating Arms..pat OCT 7th 79

Well, the thing is, that is not a 94 lever-action you ask about.

That is a 1885 Low-Wall Single-Shot.

Your serial # dates the action to 1907.

However, it could not have been a .357 Mag when made, so someone has relined the old barrel, or replaced it with a modern barrel.

What you have is a Winchester Low Wall, which could have been rechambered and rebored to .357 at some point. Is it marked ".357 S&W?" If so, a picture of that marking would help.

Well, it certainly distroyed any collector value it would have had.
So does the stock repair where the black round plug is.

On the otherhand, it made something useful out of it as a shooter from one you might not have been able to find modern ammo for. Or the bore was so bad it was unshootable anyway.

Might I ask how you came into all these old Winchesters you know nothing about?

were all given to me when my father in law passed. We didnt even know he had them so don't know where they cam from or much about them.

Well, keep posting, with pictures, not guesses as to model, and you will learn a lot about them here.

That is really a neat little gun, even though rebored and reblued with stock repair.

It would be nice if you had a good gunsmith to check it out. There are only a few things to go wrong with a Winchester Single Shot but some of them show up when converted to a modern caliber.

Lacking professional evaluation, I would work up through the scale of ammo power.
If it shot .38 Specials ok, I would try .38 +P. If they showed no sign of primer cratering, primer backing out, or casehead separation, then on to a Magnum.

yea if it a 357 there is not a lot of collector value. but a lot of guys would love to have that gun if it shoots good!
