Prevailing wisdom says I should use mag primers for my H110 loads. That's what I do in the 357mag (Winchester small mag pistol or Federal's small mag pistol). Now I'm going to load the 44mag with H110. However, Winchester WLP is the only common large primer around here. It says it's for "standard and magnum" loads, but I'm sceptical. How well does it work for heavy mag loads?

The Winchester large pistol primers are usually all I can find in my area although sometimes CCIs are available. I use the Winchester primer with all powders in .45 ACP, .45 Colt and .44 mag with never a problem.

Excellent!

Hey Mal, I have a fresh box of Cast Performance 300gr WFN and about 6lbs of H110. Don't panic if you see a mushroom cloud over Manassas.

Uh oh! I've already alerted FEMA. You should have a month or so of good shooting before they arrive.

I think you're going to like those loads. I loaded up some similar 300 gr. bullets from Laser-Cast. They are actually more pleasant to shoot than a full house 230 gr. round.

Lol.

I'm hoping the 300gr 44mag loads will be like heavy bullet loads in other guns, ie less blast and less "sharp" recoil. My goal for this load is an honest 1100-1200fps, which should be easy to accomplish based on what I've read. I've seen reports of these bullets being driven to 1400fps from a 6" revolver :what:.

I have been using Federal and Remington standard primers for over 30 years in both .357 and .44 mag loads with uniform velocities and excellent accuracy. I mainly shoot the Keith style cast bullets in both calibers in the 1300fps range. I've tried the mag primers and did not see any advantage to them. My $.02.

I have never experienced any problems using Winchester primers on any powder in my 44 mag loads. They have always been good to go.

Clark, I'm confused about your load. What is it?? I have been shooting 124 gr JHP, 24 gr H110, WLP for 10 years.

Now see, Clark, what your reputation does for you? :D

If that post had been by anyone else I would have also questioned it. Since it was from you, I thought, "Clark is shooting some uber-fast loads there. Probably topping 2,000 fps. I wonder where he found some .429 124 grainers? I might like to try that." (True thoughts at the time.)

Clark, I figured it was a typo but just thought I'd check. My own keyboard seems to have a mind of it's own at times.:p

Hodgdon shows the Rem 2 1/2 in their 44 mag loads reguardless of powder being used. The only data I know of for sure that uses a Mag primer with H110 in the 44/357 is Speer. Guess what, they sell mag primers. The Winchester is a fairly hot primer from what I`ve read. I use them in my 44 with H110 and don`t see any difference from mag primers I`ve used.

I wouldn`t worrry, load a few and see if they appear to work properly. If so use `em.
