I have my dad's Model 12 12 gauge shotgun. Wonderful gun still shoots very well for me. One question I have is "Is there any aftermarket companies that made a bar type safety for the gun? Have known it to be there for as long as I can remember. I don't remember if dad said that he bought the gun this way or he had it modified. The bar appears to be mounted in the same location as the factor safety but instead of the button it is a bar that when pushed forward the safety is "off". Help me please.

Can you post a picture? I don't know Model 12s well, but that doesn't sound familiar.

Wow! I too have a Winchester Model 12 - manufactured in 1956 but it doesn't have the bar safety as pictured. I kind of like that "swing bar" safety, wish I could see-touch-feel it to check it out.
Please let me know if you learn more about this item, I would like to have it on my model 12. They're pretty nice shotguns and will hold their value over time.

I remember some company made rotating safetys for model 12's in the 50's.
Returning servicemen apparently like the concept from using M-1 Carbines.

Might have been Williams Gun Sight who was selling them but I'm not sure? It was a small rotating lever with a rounded checkered or grooved head. Very nicely made & finished, and looked like it came from the factory that way.
Designed to be rotated with the tip of the trigger finger, with the finger outside the guard.

Yours however, appears to be a gunsmith or home shop made one-of to replicate the safety on an M-1 Garand with your finger inside the trigger guard.

Probably for the same reason.
Some returning GI wanted it to work that way after carrying an M-1 Garand through hell & back in WWII!

Found this.

This from my Model 12 collector friend:

Tom after thinking about it I did see a safety something like this in one of my books -- indicating it was an experimental set up. I have looked through a couple of books this PM but cannot find it. If I find the picture I will let you know. Warren

A rareity for sure. Definitely an after market safety.

A friend of mine has a model 12 he obtained from his father that has a safety very similar to yours. He calls it a Crow's Foot safety. His father shot left handed. That is why he put that safety on the gun.

Possibly a left hander needed something different so he could get to the safety. As far as left handers there are left handed push button safeties available now.
