I have a Winchester model 70 XTR in 30-06 made in the 80's some time, and am looking into getting a synthetic stock to put on it so I dont have to worry about damaging the nice, original, kinda fancy wood one when I take it out hunting, target shooting, etc. My question is, whenever I'm browsing long action aftermarket stocks, there is rarely any further distinctions made between the 20 or so different model 70's tat were made, other than long vs short action or pre vs post '64, with th exception that occasionally, one says "model 70 featherweight". Would a stock listed as being for the "featherweight" types work on my xtr? Is there a significant difference between the featherweight long ations compared to all the other long actions (as none of the other types is ever specifically "singled out" in the stock info like the featherweights)? If there is a diffrence, is it something minor that can be taken care of at home with some common sense and a Dremel, or such, or was the diffrence majr enough that te work would be not worth it or impossible? Thanks all.

The Featherweight rifles have a thinner barrel. A barrel on a standard gun would be too thick to fit in the barrel channel unless it were opened up. I'm sure it could be done, but it might not leave much stock material near the end of the stock

That as pretty much what I was guessing, but I wasnt sure, and didnt know if that was the only real differnce, or it there was something else to it also. The barrel thing would be easy enough to take care of (assumig it doesnt end up too thin in the end.) Just kinda curious.also, all the featherweight stocks seem to be close to $30 cheaper for some reason, so I wastrying to figre out if one could be use with a little easy work to save some $$ for ammo, or it it wasnt possibl, or not worththe effort. In the end, I'm guessing probly not worth the effort/risk for $30...but I'm a REALLY stingy bastadge, so the urge to try and save a buck is like a heroin addiction.....luckily, when it comes to my guns, I usually wise up and just pay the extra to get it right without worries.

jrfoxx,

Featherweight rifles/stocks were made for both the XTR model, and later for the Classic model. What you need is a stock made for a long action, post '64 pushfeed model rifle.
