When it comes to shotguns in general, the names I hear mentioned most often are Mossberg, Remington (in the past, anyway), Benelli, Ithaca, and Beretta. And some of various Turkish brands. One name I rarely hear talked about is Winchester. Are they not that popular or just not noteworthy?

Depends on what shotgun types you're talking about. Winchester's old Model 12 is still good; their discontinued SX-1 was a great semi. Their O/Us? Most folks do not like them because the stock dimensions seem to fit no one and thus the recoil was always harsh.

My son has a sears 12ga semi-auto . If i recall it was made by Wichester. It could be a SX1? It has the vent rib. And has a center bead and muzzle bead. And it has a adjustable choke. I took it one time for skeet. Hit one clay lol. I do ok with my mossberg 20 ga knocking them down.

My first new firearm was a 120. It was never used hard, but never failed either. I still have it. Definitely not fancy or anything high end.

You’re right, they don’t seem to as popular.
But I have a model 12, 16 ga from the 1920s that is just super slick, and a model 1300 Defender 12 ga that is nearly as nice. I’ve heard gripes about the 1300, but I’ve never had any issue with it.... though honestly I probably have fewer than 200 rounds through it

Model 12, Model 48. Model 21, Model 23, Model 24 and the 101 were all very nice shotguns and many are still in demand. Depending on the use, today there are plenty of other shotguns that as far as NEW models are concerned would be in more demand than a new Winchester.

My 20 gauge Model 12 is still going strong but it's not yet a century old. It was made in 1927 so only 94 years young. I also have a modern Winchester Winchester SXP and it has been reliable so far but I've only had it about a year and only had in the field a couple times. The SXP does have the advantage of interchangeable chokes.

The only gripe on the 1200/1300/1400 that I've heard was the ejector being eat by the action. And I can honestly say I've replaced more ejectors in that one shotgun design than I've worked on any other single design. I keep spares of the three types of ejector ive found in them. They are that bad.

The 97 and 12 are classics. The 37s are great but I can't see the prices they go for nowadays.

Winchester is a lot like Smith and Wesson. You wonder why they aren't known for making shotguns. Then you buy a couple of their shotguns....... then you know

Mines pretty low mileage, so it’s still okay. I will keep a better eye on it though

Maybe I’m just too lowbrow, but I love that 1300. For me, it handles very nicely... and I’ve never had to mortar it to eject certain shells like the 870 I had.

The FN P-12 is kind of a 1300 with a few updates. But it's an FN so it's WAY cooler.

1930’s era Model 12 16 Ga in my safe as well.

Its been well used and has a few marks in the wood here and there from honest hunting, but the action is as smooth as sipping hundred dollar whiskey on a warm summers evening. ;)

Stay safe.

The Winchester SX3 and SX4 are the same shotgun as the original Browning Gold(not the current 10 gauge) and Browning Silver. The only differences are cosmetic, internally they are the same. The Browning Maxus for all intent and purpose is the same shotgun internally too. I have a Maxus and four SX3’s. Have had them a pretty good while now and really like them, they’ve been trouble free and have an earned reputation for soft recoil.

I seriously doubt his shotgun is an SX1. They’re cost to manufacture I’m sure kept them from being sold by Sears.

Like George P I believe the SX1 is very high quality.

Does Winchester actually make any of their shotguns? The SxS are Miroku just like their rifles. I don’t think their pumps and semi-autos are Miroku though. I could be wrong.

Winchester has not manufactured firearms in a long time. The Winchester name is licensed by FN from the Olin Corp.

101, SX3, SX4, XPR and M70 are assembled in Portugal from parts made in Belgium and other countries. SXP is made in Turkey. Lever guns in Japan by Miroku. No SxS’s are currently sold under the Winchester name and have not been for a long time.

My bad....I meant O/U.

The O/U were made in Japan by IIRC, Kodensha. Now they are sourced from various places under the FN banner, including - or so I have been told - Portugal and Turkey
