I have a pgo non-magnum wingmaster with 2 rd choate extension. Prior to yesterday I put around 175-200 rounds flawlessly through it. I took it out yesterday and after the 5th shot or so, the action locked up stiff as a board. I COULD NOT open it and eject the spent shell without feeling like I was forcing something. There wasnt another shell fed either so it wasn't a double feed or cartridge stop issue I don't think. I left it alone for 10 minutes, picked it up, tried to cycle it a few times and finally it budged and ejected the shell. It did the same thing again after another 15 rounds and locked up even tighter. Can someone please diagnose this?

Shell type, brand, have you fired this shell before? When was the last time the shotgun was cleaned? When was the extension put on? Any other add on's such as a shell carrier?

Thanks.

Good, thanks I almost forgot. I do have atacstar sidesaddle....BUT it was always on there for all of the 200 or so that went out flawlessly. I did however loosen the screws in the trigger assembly just a tiny bit today. I clean my guns THOROUGHLY after each and every time it's been used. Shell extension was mounted at the same time the sidesaddle was, about 2 weeks ago. The shells were Federal Game Load 7.5, the same shell I shoot for practice out of all my shotguns and the same shell used in this particular gun the whole time...

Do you use a chamber brush or a 10 guage brush to clean the chamber? If you do not own either one you can also use a 12 ga brush or mop wrapped in oooo steel wool or scotch brite pad.

To verify that it is a chamber problem load single rounds of the same ammo and when it jams remove the barrel, you will have to use a small screwdriver to push down on the back of the extractor to allow it to release the rim of the hull. The use a cleaning rod to knock out the stuck hull.

Doing this allows you to isolate the problem to the chamber and rule out any mechanical problems.

Hope this helps.

When my Express was new, it did that a dozen or so times in the first 100-150 shots.

When I disassembled the shotgun for cleaning, I noticed that a sharp corner of the receiver where the bolt moves back and forth when ejecting the shell was worn out and "smoothed". See if you can see any wear on the forward end of the receiver near the bottom of the ejection side.

My first thought would be that your left shell stop is letting the shells loose from the magazine early and they are getting wedged between the shell carrier and the bolt. It is possible on older guns without the flexitab. Usually the shell latch has something that keeps it from moving freely like dirt or grit jamming it or it could have a burr that prevents it from flexing.

When you have this malfunction, look at the underside of the gun and see if you can see a fresh shell from the magazine under the carrier.

The rough chamber would be my SECOND thought followed by something bent or broken.

On my brand new remmy 870 express, 20" open choke barrel and 2round mag extension, I was shooting 2 3/4" Winchester Universal #5 bird shot and had similar problems, but not with every shot. You couldn't even rack the slide sometimes. Other times the shell jammed leaving the ejection port.

With the same ammo my freinds 870 express with a 26" vented barrel and no mag extention (mod. rem. choke I think) he has the same problem.

Shooting 3" magnum number 4 shot didnt have any jams, but I shot fewer of these (forget what brand) Keep me posted on what you find out, maybe I have the same problem.

Sounds like the chamber to me. Run single shells and check as XM21 has recommended. This is the most likely since it sounds like your extractor is grabbing the shell but the bolt is frozen. I would be curious if this occurs with any other ammunition. I do not use federal, I believe there are issues with this ammunition sticking in chambers, one of the old timers will probably jump in and point you to a thread on this.

Sounds like a mix of chamber and shell. I was shooting some Universal hulls loaded with buckshot and slugs over the weekend and the aluminum bases were binding so bad I had to beat the butt of the gun on the concrete shooting lane to eject the shell!!! I got home and scrubbed all 3 of my 12ga. Remington's bores and chambers with 0 steel wool wrapped around a worn 12ga. brush soaked in Kroil. Still have some problems with some of the bases on the other hulls I have.

AUN,take it apart and check the action bars with a straightedge and a ruler if you think they are bent,it is very easy to tell if they are bent or out of alignment.

If you have screws through the holes where the pins were, and they are too snug, when the gun warms up it can lock up, just like you describe. I learned that the hard way a long time ago with a scope. Really had me baffled. Of course, a fouled chamber/shell combination can do it too.

Thanks, Nice info Virginian. :D
