Wingmaster, police model

Police model Wingmasters were once common as dirt (in every condition) around police supply houses or shops that dealt in police inventory disposal. Nowadays you really have to look to find one in only fair condition. This listing is the only one I've seen recently in new condition and looks to be on a few collector's lists....

Wish I could afford it... these were the standard workhorse in my era. You couldn't find a simpler more effective CQ weapon.

I regret passing on some good used 870 police guns several years ago. However, I've since picked up a couple of WM and a new express, added 18-1/2 inch barrels, and went shooting at some local tactical shotgun matches. There are some excellent options to the police 870 that in no way disappoint. Some don't care for the express, but after a tweak or two, mine is as smooth and robust as the WM.

I quess anything is collectible if someone wants it but 870's are not generally collecting type weapons. There are Over 10 Million of them out there and they are all mostly the same except for finish and furniture. That same model was made in a limited production run a year back and sold well, so maybe Remington will keep this up and the buled P model will become a standard again. Don't know why anyone would want it, but if people want it they may keep making them.

I was looking at that very auction earlier today.
That's a very nice shotgun but hardly worth the money that is being bid currently.
Two years ago I bought a Police 870 off of GunBroker from a Minnesota FFL and frequent GB seller that bought several from the MN. Highway Patrol among several other FFL's at a state auction.
The Police 870 I bought was manufactured in 1979,was Wingmaster blue just like the one in the auction lemaymiami linked and mine had rifle sights.
I am not even sure mine had ever even seen service,that's how clean and pristine it was.
The price I paid was $300,which was probably a lot less than the FFL who won it and as he told me,he bid and won several others, from the Highway Patrol auction.
By the way I was the one and only bidder for my very nice Police 870.

Very nice.
But although I have 5 riot guns this is of no use to me.
Also, you need to be real careful that the barrel is at least 18" and not 17.99" or less

Looks just like the ones in the local area police cars back in the 1970s. Sure wish I could have picked up one of those when they traded them for the 870P models. They did more riding in the cars than on the range.

Our boss in his ultimate wisdom:banghead: decided our old Wingmaster riot guns were a liability. He had them taken to a local scrap yard and crushed. I was not allowed to salvage any part of the guns despite telling him the receiver was the only part considered a gun. These are the types of people who vote anti gun. Our guns looked kinda rough since they had been dropped more than fired but they could have been saved. The saddest thing was they were documented as belonging to Wells Fargo. I couldn't get it through to him that they were valuable just for that reason. Shortly after their demise, he had the S&W revolvers destroyed the same way.
