Hello all, its that time of year where we start dawning those heavy coats and multiple layers, especially in the midwest and more north. Does the change in dress effect your choice of carry? My main carry is my 9mm CZ Rami, probably 85% of the time, but now that its starting to get cold and multiple layers are worn I am more apt to carry my Taurus 65 .357 since its more easily concealed with multiple layers and with others dawning heavy coats the added power helps. Does your carry stay the same in all seaons or does it change with the weather?

P.S. Pics are always nice :)

I've been carrying my G26 just as I do in the summer.

Clothing really isn't much of a barrier, in fact the most denim will do is plug the HP's and make them penetrate further.

It is nice to be able to CC larger guns since jackets cover guns well.

I could carry a much larger gun under my MN-appropriate winter attire, but I don't, usually. I just go with the CW9 as per usual. Although I have thought about packing my 1911 in the winter. More for fun than concern that my 9mm's aren't packing enough punch. I agree with coolluke that winter coats and such won't have too significant an impact on penetration. If anything they will clog and get FMJ performance.

My main dilemma in winter is how to keep my weapon quickly accessible, so have often been carrying my LCP or snubby in a pocket, rather than a larger gun IWB. Just because it is easier to access the pocket (hands are usually in there anyway, pocket zips shut if not.

I carry the same XD45C in an IWB year round. There are enough dirtbags juiced up on meth and the like that I choose to carry a major caliber handgun at all times. I find the "seasonal CCW change" that a lot of people make a bit silly. IMHO: If you need a .357/.40/.45/whatever in the Winter you need it in the Summer too. If anyone thinks a .45 is too uncomfortable to carry in hot weather just think about what that screwdriver stuck in your neck by a crackhead after you emptied a mouse gun into his torso is gonna feel like... :)

During the winter months I usually carry one of these in a vertical shoulder holster (under a zip-up jacket):

.....okay not really, I actually just keep my same carry rotation: M&P9 FS, Glock 19, Colt 1911 Commander

1911 for me

I've rotated through various carry pieces over the years... but right now, the 1911 is my go-to piece. Weather doesn't matter, carry what you like.

I typically just carry a Glock 26 as an off-duty CCW choice. But, in winter I sometimes carry my full-frame Glock 37 duty weapon since the heavier clothing makes it much easier to conceal this larger firearm.

Not really, my daily carry is my Glock 26 all year round, just as it was when I lived <20 miles from Lake Michigan.

I might sneak my Glock 21SF out a few times, but pretty much it's the G26, same as always.

G19 year round, I tend to just add a light weight base layer, under armour works well, warm no bulk to make getting your gun easier.

I love winter...depending on my mood it's either a 1911, BHP, or Taurus 99AF in a shoulder holster under two sweatshirts and a heavy coat with no concerns of showing or printing. The little Sig 238 gets a well-earned rest until spring.

No change due to season.

I'm only allowed to carry certain guns anyway, because they are approved by my department. So I carry my 642 and my M&P9c summer and winter.

I never carry my duty gun unless I'm at work. My 5 inch slide M&P Pro with a light attached is just not practical to carry on a daily basis unless it is open carry on a duty belt.

I carry a full sized 1911 year round but in the winter, if I have to wear heavy outer wear, then I'll add a smaller firearm and extra knife to my carry gear for the coat pockets. On the outside chance a bad situation arises, I may not have the time to unsnap, unzip1, unzip2, and pull up to draw out in a defensive reaction.

Heck, I could probably dial 911 faster than all that...lol.

No, not here in Florida. Yes, it might get cold enough sometimes to have a jacket or coat on in the morning, but it's rare, like maybe two or three days a year, that it would stay on all day. Concealment is required by law here, and preferred by me.

As I read the OP, the question seems to be more about concern over penetrating multiple layers of clothing not which brand pistol responders are carrying. So responding from that perspective, I carry the same ammo year round, Hornady Critical Duty 9mm.

And I'm pretty sure that it performs the same way regardless of which brand firearm it is fired from. But if you feel the need to immediately go fanboy then by all means, knock yourself out.

When the day is dawning and I am donning a heavy coat, I carry the same gun that I carried in the summer.

I carry my 1911, but one of these days Ill get a little revolver like the LCR for pocket carry in a jacket pocket. Ease of access is more important than firepower in some cases.

In my opinion and for what it's worth, with the proper holster, belt and cover garment, you can carry the same weapon year round. My carry rotation is a S&W J frame, full size 1911 and a Vaquero Sheriff's model, all carried in a Don Hume JIT slide.;)

I am 6'3" and 200 lbs. I have just gone to AWB carry much of the time. I have found my shield in a PJ's Kydex regular IWB holster is very fast on and off and the Shield's external safety that puts my mind at ease. I am experimenting with my PM9 in a Garrett's Silent Thunder with adjustable cant, but so far the standard FBI cant works fine with the longer grip on the shield.

Pockets, thanks for the grammar lesson. I'll blame that one on a long day at work and not being an english teacher :p.

I guess the main reason for posting my question is not a matter of needing to carry a larger caliber due to more clothing, as some have pointed out that a HP might be more prone to get clogged and act like a FMJ, but more the opportunity to carry a larger framed firearm. The extra clothing just allows me to conceal my .357 revolver (which I have a soft spot for) easier in the winter. Obviously resulting in a little more ballistic firepower compared to the 9mm.
