A few things here came as news to me.

1: Wolf is now in the firearms import business
2: VEPRs seem to be back, for good this time I hope.
3: There's a VEPR in 7.62x54R! (The choices were pretty much Mosin or PSL before this)

I'm hoping to find 'em at SHOT and give it a look. Anyone here know any more about this?

I was picking up an AR lower from my FFL while he was un-boxing another gents VEPR .308 so I was able to check it out. I'm sure the 7.62x54 version will be of just as high quality thus forcing me to bite the bullet and pick one up:)

My issue with this rifle is the magazines. The price isn't great and they only hold 5 rounds. With that factor in consideration, I see no real advantage over a good Mosin. Of course, it's semi-auto, but I could load a Mosin with stripper clips faster than someone could load VEPR mags.

Mosin Stripper Clips: $0.70
VEPR Magazines: $40.00

Plus, a mosin is easier to tailor to your preferences, can be lighter, and can shoot any type of ammunition. Harder to scope though, but not immensely so.

i was lucky enough to pick one of these a while back from Atlantic, they are fun to shoot but are a bit on the heavy side

It's not really a target bench gun, I would not think the accuracy would be that great is any caliber...What is the advantage of the VEPR rifles over and above being a pretty AK variant?

Essentially, the VEPR 54r is a PSL rifle with only 5 round magazines, no muzzle device, a different non-interchangeable stock, and a slightly heavier barrel, and possibly better manufacturing standards.

PSL rifles can be just as nice if it is a nice build. They have been known to shoot 1moa, 2-4 is more what can be expected, but the thin barrel heats up easily. It also cools down faster than a heavy barrel though.

well at least if you came to a deep river you could float across on that stock. :D
