Would 1 Red Dot work for a Mk II and an S&W 627?

I have a S&W 627 Pro Series 8-shot 357 that I love. I'm picking up a Ruger Mk II in stainless to go with it. I think they'll make a wonderful couple, and I have two questions.

(1) Is it possible to find a red dot (or scope) that could work on either gun?

I realize I'd need the proper mount for each firearm.

(2) Where should I start when it comes to a quality scope?

I'm pretty unschooled in optics, and just not sure what to look for or where to begin. I'm probably nearer the low end in budget, but I DON'T want some airsoft toy that will fail after one shot from the 357.

My eyes aren't what they used to be (into bifocals now). I'm not interested in competition shooting or hunting... mostly use the firearms for plinking, practice, and self-defense should it come up.

Thank you.

Yes

I have several ultra dots and swap them around my pistols and revolvers.
You need to replace the factory rings and get rings such a the original Weavers. The factory rings are split vertically and they come apart. The rings like Weavers stay on the scope and you just loosen the mount screws.
You may not be able to find the same brand scope mount for the Ruger and S&W. Different brand scope rails have different cross slot spacing. I just cut a new slot if i'm swapping scopes and know I'm going to switch them around. When I swap one scope from another its only 12 clicks off in elevation and 5 in windage. This is for shooting Bullseye at 25 yards.
If you buy a reflex sight with one cross slot such a a Burris Fast Fire II. Its easy to switch the sight but not having a repeatable click adjustment for the sight makes it more time consuming to re-sight it between pistols.
I'm sure other makes of scopes will work if they have good internal adjustments and your mounts line up.

You can use a JPoint or Docter sight on both. You'll need to buy mounts for each gun and, of course, re-zero when you swap the sight from one to the other.

Here's a JPoint on my XDm 9mm:

And on my CZ75 SA:

NOTE: I have sights for each gun. They aren't all that expensive.

I LOVE mine on my Mark III. I bought a tasco, they run about $40 online.

Wow, those JPoints are slick. I really like those, and though I've seen that style of sight before I'd never seen nor heard of them. Thank you.

Given that my wife and I had to make some big decisions regarding her parents yesterday, my budget has become suddenly slimmer. Probably going to have to go the route that Greg suggested for now with a lower cost dot... and save up for the JPoint (man, I like those).

Thank you! Nice to know I can swap sights for now.

James

I shoot this Tasco on my Ruger.

I shoot it's brothers and sisters on my 9X21 Para, my 686 Smith and my Benelli Super 90.

They hold up well in heavy competition.
