Would-be robber killed in fight with store clerk
March 9th, 2009 @ 11:33am
By Sam Penrod

CENTERFIELD -- A man was killed in a struggle for his gun when he tried to rob a Centerfield convenience store early Monday morning. Police arrived to find the man dead on the store's floor.

According to investigators, the man approached one of the clerks at the Walkers convenience store off Highway 89 on the border between Gunnison and Centerfield at about 12:20 a.m. as she was taking out the garbage at closing. He took her hostage at gunpoint. He then went in the store and took the other clerk hostage as well.

He forced them to tie each other up so he could steal the money. However, one of the clerks fought back and got the robber's gun, a.22 caliber rifle, away from him. That is when one of the clerks used the suspect's gun to shoot and kill him.

The clerks then called 911 and, officers arrived to find the robber killed.

The name of the suspect is not being released, pending notification of the next of kin.

Police say they believe the clerk was justified in shooting the suspect.

The store is back open for business as usual.

The video in the link says it was the female clerk that got the gun and shot the attacker.

Lessons learned: Fighting back really can work, and .22's really can kill.

Another lesson learned: It is physically possible according to the news for two people to tie each other up.
LOL I cant stop laughing trying to pic the first persone being tied up and struggling to figure out how to tie up the other person.

in a society that cares about no childs left behind but everyone else is concerned about his rights; why not?

Why do they call them "would be robbers?"

Because they would be robbers if they pulled it off... instead, the perp is just dead.

This is a great story about how a little bit of courage can go a long way.

Maybe it wasn't the 22. Maybe he died of embarassment when a girl took his gun away. (sarcasm).

Robber Lesson #1: DOn't leave your rifle on the desk so your hostage can easily grab it and shoot you with it.

Hmm. THank God the guy must have been a strung out methhead, junkie, etc and not using his mind very well. Had he not been so stupid, who knows how this would have end.

As far as the news commentators ssaying they believe they were justified in using force, well its just pathetic. Perhaps they will come to conclusion that it was not justified and the two women should be locked up for defending their lives.

This is absolutely impossible!! This is the second thread now in the last couple days where a .22 was successfully used in self defense. Only .45s are capable of taking down a bad guy...so these incidents are clearly fake.

Good for the clerk and her bravery. This just goes to show that ANY attempt is better than giving in. Being tied up for a simple convenience store robbery is a bad sign, so she did the right thing.

I grew up in centerfield and it doesn't suprise me that a clerk would have the courage and knowledge to grab the gun and shoot the perp in the head. If she had killed him with a .45 it would have been amazing but it was a .22. That is miraculous! Hurray for not being a victim and waiting for your chance to strike.

Forfreedom, like I pointed out in a the pizza hut thread, someone can not just be instantly cleared even if it is super obvious that it was in self defense. There is allot of paper work and people in the process to clear that it was in self defense, it can take a day or two to process. That is why the news says thus far it does not look like charges will be pressed. There is also always that chance, if ever so small that there is a twist to the story and was not self defense, so police need to take a day or two to make sure that all the t's are crossed, and I's dotted.

Good work ladies. I hope they realize that next time might not be as easy to get out of. They should really start carrying their own guns and shooting robbers BEFORE they tie them up.

I was wondering if that one Clerk was going to do it, it took her an awfully long time to take the oppertunity presented to her in the video.

Whadda dummy, that is one less perp to worry about in this life.

Oh yes... there is another thread or two related to speed of attack or time to respond to one. Take a good look at that video and watch how long it took for that one clerk to complete the mental process to act on that weapon to kill the perp who apparently does not know it coming.

Amazing how fast the other shoe drops eh.

Both were brave and didn’t panic. He already had the money why was he tying them up? To rape them or so they wouldn’t call the police, no one knows. I am glad that brave woman didn’t wait and comply with the robbers wishes to find out. It seems to me that the era of “just comply with the attackers demands” is coming to a close and good riddance for that.

I myself have been robbed at gas station a few times in the past. They didnt do it by open armed robbery. No, they had to use various... infilteration methods to open up the station and get to the loot combined with a bait girl with car trouble.

That was how they got to me. But we find the man later and get him because he was bragging about the idiot gas station boy (Me.) to all who will listen and how much money he got out of there.

Small town = easy tracking from those who cannot SHUT. UP. So, I got robbed. Fine. No problem just waited a while and thief did himself in.

They will TELL YOU to hand over your money or whatever else demanded by thief in my day. All of that stuff is replaceable, your life isnt. I could care less if I was a clerk at Ft Knox. They want the gold bars, Sure, have at it. /sarcasm

However, the problem today seems to be one where they will shoot you anyway or compound the original robbery crime with other crimes anyway.

That is why I dont wory in those kinds of jobs anymore. I dont care what they pay.

I cannot help but wonder if that was a truckstop they knocked over.

Absolutely! Love a happy ending.
I'm a little confused as to how someone in a situation that results in them killing a man in self-defense is a "happy ending".

While it is preferable outcome to see the would-be victims survive and come out on top, it's hardly call it a "happy ending" for anyone involved.

Just once I'd like to hear/read a story written something like this:

"An armed robbery ended badly for one rifle-toting, dumbass criminal today when two very brave women saved the taxpayers a lot of money. The scumbag, who desperately needed to be shot, entered the convenience store with the intent to rob and apparently harm the two female clerks. Unfortunately for him, the women were much smarter, much braver and, apparently, much more competent than he was. In an amazingly ironic twist of fate the gunman was disarmed by a tied-up female clerk who then shot this Darwin Award candidate, in the head, with his own gun. No he wasn't "a good man", no he didn't always "help his neighbors" and, no, we really don't care that he won't be among our viewers tonight. Well done ladies!"

I'd feel better.

I just have to plain disagree. Personally *I* am indeed HAPPY this scumbag is dead. But I can see where others could legitimately disagree with me. I grew up very very poor, and have been the victim of crimes, and I think the only good robber is a dead robber.

And as for being happy for the victim, it's a *relative* happiness - a lot MORE happy than other possible outcomes, but no, not as happy as if nothing unusual had happened that day - unless she gains a newfound perspective on life, valuing life more having had a brush with death, and thus makes more of herself and her life.

As for the robber, no - you are correct, not a happy ending for him. But he doesn't count, in my book.

The word Happy does not count here.

I understand how it would be good news that the clerks are safe and no one else shopping got hurt etc etc etc. But Happy aint it.

We can at least GLOAT about how STUPID that crook was doing what he did with the weapon. It never fails to astound me how someone in a position of power (However temporary it is) can do something so dumb.

Those clerks did good. Oppertunity knocked and they took it.
