I live in Kaleepornia and when I moved here from Oregon I followed the law and registered my guns. I also registered the AR-15 lower receiver that I brought with me. I actually did not intend to build an AR with it. I bought it just to have it. I had sold off my other AR-15s.
Anyway, the Bureau of Firearms at the Office of the Attorney General required I send them “a photo of the AR-15 in it’s final configuration”.
I called and spoke with a nice lady that told me that I “must build the rifle then send photos of the configuration for approval and acceptance of the rifle.”
It’s almost hilarious. I was not planning to build one, so, at the insistence of the OAG’s BOF I built a “Featureless AR-15”. No funky “Kali-Key” or any other mechanisms. It just doesn’t have evil parts, like; a pistol grip, a bayonet lug, flash suppressor (though muzzle brakes are allowed), a forend grip or an evil “bullet button”.
It operates just like any other AR-15. I have a normal mag release that allows me to swap mags just like the AR-15 was designed to do. It just looks really odd so I Cerakoted it to make it look like a “ray gun” and now it’s not black so I removed the “scariness”.
Believe it or not, that Thordson stock is very nice when shooting the carbine. I did add some Magpul sights to it and I may add an Odin Works “Atlas” compensator to it.
Now, I said all that to say the Kali Key is just another invention that tries to get around the wording of the law in California so folks can have all those “evil” features on their AR based long guns. I opted to go the route I did because it made sense for me.
