would you? Buy a S&W 29 for...

I had five of them, if you count 629s and one 629 Classic. I really loved the Classic with the underlug, but any of them will get loose with continued heavy loads. If you can shoot Specials, and sight it in and take a deer, and then go back to Specials, I'd say get it. Plan on gloves or aftermarket grips.

I had a 8 inch redhawk and it was a pain to carry in the field. I used a shoulder holster while hunting and I am so short the bottom of the barrel kept slapping my knee!! I traded it for a 4 inch 629 and it has traveled everywhere with me.
If it is going to be for a range gun I would buy it at that price. The longer barrel will be very accurate!!

The price sounds good. I would not get it because I also am not a fan of the longer barrel or the nickel. Make it 6" and blue and I'd be taking it home at that price.

If you like nickel and the 8-3/8" barrel, I doubt you'll find a much better price for one in great condition. Around here most of the good used model 29s run in the $700 range.

well... the thing followed me home... what on earth will I ever do with myself... this is getting out of control guys...

my name is steven and I have a problem...

I am very proud of you !!I have a 29-3 (6 1/2") and a 629 DX in 8 3/8".. Not to mention Seven other Smith Revolvers in the 8 3/8" length..Ranging from 41mag, .357, .22 and 22 mag.. the gun you have will make a great target gun.....Congrats..DS

my name is steven and I have a problem...

no problem steven just a minor form of insanity shared by many of us"n-frame feinds"
i have a 4"629 waiting for me at my ffl's and i cant wait!

btw you got a good deal, relish it.

prelock n-frames rule.

I used to hunt and shoot silhouettes with an 8 3/8'' 29. I killed 4 deer with it. I didnt like the nickel and spray painted it flat black. Still have it along w/a couple more 8 3/8 N frames. I have taken a liking to 6'' ones lately. Fix'n to try a 4''. They're all good

I like it!!!! The barrel, though long, isnt unwieldy in the least...IMHO.... the single action is SLICK (S&W for ya). The double action is a bit stiff, but I can deal. I look forward to the first range trip.

I have a 6-inch 629-0 revolver that's never been fired. That barrel length is about all I'd want before going to a rifle, but each has his own preference. I'd heard there were some problems with the first generation 629s and called S&W earlier this week. The tech guy there said only a small number were affected and asked me for the serial number. Turned out it was okay. I also gave him the serial number of my 686 (also an unfired early edition). It, too, checked out okay, but he had me do some mechanical checks, which it passed.

But what does an 8-inch gun have in the way of advantages over a 6-inch? Very few. It's tougher to carry, takes much longer to draw, much longer to acquire the target, aim and fire -- and it weighs more. How this can translate into any advantage is beyond me. Sure, the sight radius is longer than the 6-inchers, but a rifle has a better sight radius and is arguably easier to pack and is better for defense and hunting.

My first choice would be a 6-inch .44 magnum, followed by a 4-inch. The gun still shows its raw power in the shorter barrel, but shines in the longer barrels, the 6-incher, in my view, being ideal.

that round has never been intended to be used in easy to carry/conceal handguns. a 4" or less 44 Mag revolver doesn't make sense

Makes sense to me... And anything I shoot within 50 feet or less... Apparently

This is also a 29-2.

Gorgeous gun.

8 3/8" is a wonderful gun to shoot, and it is entirely carryable if you do it right. Hell, I even have a belt holster for a 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk.:D

I think you did well.

I appreciate that armed bear.... I look forward to getting some range time under my belt with it.. maybe even some hunting service one of these days...

Good job Steve, good job. The gun addiction may be name related. My name is Steven and I have a serious problem, I have filled two safes now and they are stacking up in the closet.

It is too long a barrel for me. 5.5" is my limit for anything I actually want to carry on me, hunting or snowshoeing. But that's my preference. It won't be a belt gun for you but put it in a bandoleer and you should be alright.
