I got lucky this weekend and bought a S&W Model 34-1, 2” barrel round butt. It’s in 90%+ condition other than the stocks are not original to the gun. There is an odd ball round head screw for the stocks. I tried eBay for a proper screw. Wow, $7 to $8 for the screw plus a few bucks to put it in an envelope.

Does anyone have any links for S&W parts.

S&W parts department?

Brownells?

Those would be the logical places to get S&W parts.

But if the stocks are not S&W OEM, then the right S&W screw most likely won't fit them.

I hear ya, I picked up a semi auto Thompson TM1 and it takes literally 40lbs+ of force to cock it. Long story short, others have talked about the problem and some people make this spring kit that helps a lot (only 3 springs to it) and they want $80 for it!

I would probably not complain about spending $8-$12 bucks for a screw after paying what, maybe $400 if you got a good deal or $500 plus for a vintage S&W.

Hey, he doesn't want to get screwed!
Unfortunately, you have to pay the price because it is a specialty screw, not a $0.15 screw from Home Depot.

If the stocks are original to the gun they should have the serial number marked inside on one or both panels. Also be aware that S&W have made thread changes at least once, so if you go to Numrich (Gunparts Corp.) be sure to include the revolver's serial number, and approximate date of manufacture if you know it.

I would look it up, but I'm where my book isn't.

I needed sling swivel screws for an 03, went to numrich and paid $10 plus shipping for a pair. What I received wasn't the odd rounded screw they pictured, but just two old rusted wood screws. I returned them and found 2 wood screws the same size in my tool box. I think sometimes original, in this case "original G.I." is a little overrated for some things.

Sounds like yours may be proprietary, in that case ten or so bucks doesn't sound too bad.

I think I got lucky. Called S&W today. The guy I talked to said that they don’t stock them anymore but that he found one in his desk drawer a few days ago and he is mailing it to me. I just hope it’s the right length for the grips.

Are they S&W grips or not??
You never dis say for certain!

If not, and they are after-market grips?

A S&W grip screw is not going to fit.

If you need something bad enough, you will have to pay what the seller asks for it. You and I may not like it but that's the way it is.

If you restore guns, then often you have to pay the piper to fix them up right. Some old guns, particularly foreign, use have screw threads and weird thread pitches that you cannot buy today so if you try a modern screw, it strips the hole out. Wood screws are more forgiving but you will often get weird head sizes and tapers that are difficult to find at the local hardware store. Another reason is that most modern screws at the local hardware store are coming from China and are made of very soft steel compared with a lot of screws from yesteryear. Many replica screws are now of that very soft steel. It is a pain to heat treat screws so they don't strip, break, swage, etc.

In order to restore some old milsurps, I've had to learn to swage and redress buggered screw heads, clean and repair old threads, refinish screws, etc. in order to fix them up right. One advantage to fleabay versus gunpartscorp or sarco is that you at least get to see the merchandise. Stick to experienced sellers because they are more likely to actually know what the correct screws belong to if you don't know.

One last option is to go to your local gunsmith. Every gunsmith I know have small screws, pins, etc. from all sorts of guns and if you are on good terms with them, they often let you try screws until you find one that works and there is no shipping to pay.
