Well, I'm stunned. According to the article, the gun didn't "go off", he "accidentally shot himself". Finally a reporter gets it right!

Derry — The man who accidently shot himself with a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun Sunday night thought the gun was unloaded, according to police.
Derry police eye death of David Mazzaglia
David J. Mazzaglia Jr., died after he shot himself in a Linlew Drive apartment while handling the gun.
The gun was legally owned by a friend of Mazzaglia’s, Derry police Capt. Vernon Thomas said. Police wouldn’t release the friend’s name.
Mazzaglia and a group of friends at 16 Linlew Drive, were handling firearms that night, Thomas said, but there appeared to be “nothing devious” going on. “It appears firearms were a hobby.”
On Monday, an uncle who asked not to be named, told the New Hampshire Union Leader that Mazzaglia “knew guns very well.” The uncle said the entire family was still trying to understand how the accident happened.
“It’s a horrible situation,” he said.
The friends called for help shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday night, but Mazzaglia had already died of the head wound, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
