Well, a buddy of mine called me today. He won 2500 dollars on a lottery ticket. Wanted to go gun shopping. We shopped all around at several different places. He had his heart set on a xd 45. We were astonished at some of the prices. He didnt want to do the online thing with local transfer, etc. The cheapest we could find in our town was $650 :what: for an xd with the cheapo gear kit. We drove about 35 minutes to one of my favorite indoor ranges where I but reloading stuff. They have a decent gun store in there. We ended up finding a xd 45 4" NIB with the regular "gear" kit it comes with. They were asking 599. We hee-hawed around with them until we got it down to 555, cash, plus tax. He bought it. It still seemed kind of high to me, but I guess supply and demand is the key around here anymore. He naturally got delayed during the NICS, no big surprise there. Of course, being IL he wont be able to get it until next week anyway, so no big deal.

At Bud's Gun shop, the XD .45 Service is $505. (+ffl fee)
If you live in an area near a "Sportman's Warehouse" (if military, they give a discount) you might have saved a few bucks.
He'll enjoy it. It's a good gun.

I suggested internet purchase, but thats not the way he is. More of a "I want to hold it first" kinda guy. They are supposed to be great guns.

I'll come back with a range report early next week.

Smart, I think.

I happen to like the XD .45 a lot. On paper, a Glock is really similar (though I do like the grip safety of the XD also).

However, in my hand, the Glock is really uncomfortable, whereas the XD feels great (and shoots really well, too). I'm one of those people for whom the Glock does not point naturally.

I own a glock, and he really liked it also. They are not to be had for a decent price though, at least around here. I must say, I liked the feel of the xd also. :)

I've been competing at a local club range with a Ruger Mark II Target, which has a grip angle just like a Luger, i.e. totally different from a Glock, XD, 1911, etc. And it works fine for me.

It's hard to predict which guns will or won't feel "right" without holding them, IMO.:)

Nothing wrong with that.

Find a gun store in your area that sucks.

Visit them and hold all the guns you want.

Then order off the internet and take delivery though a good FFL holder.

I do my homework, but don't let "support your hometown" cloud my judgment. All of my hometown / local gun shops have gone off the deep end recently.

My local shop has them for $476.

Which IMO sounds about right. I had told him that it wasnt the greatest deal, but alas, around here thats as good as its going to get without going to the internet. Which he refuses to do. Oh well, as least he has the gun that he wants and makes him happy.

The XD45 is an excellant pistol.
I'm sure he'll be happy with it.
In my opinion it's worth 20$ or 30$ more to buy a handgun locally.
If something isn't right you have someone to go to plus you've helped support a valuable local resource.
Don't get me wrong the internet has it's place, but it's good to support your local gun dealer.

I bought my XD45 Service for 499 brand new from my FFL dealer. The problem with ordering online is, you can't look over the gun before you buy it. I like to support my local dealer, besides they are nice enough to give me discounts. :D

HAD the first version of the XD45 a couple years ago and I sold it off to get xd40sc. Mind you I do like my 40 but if I were to get a do-over I'd probably stayed with the 45 or waited till the 45 "compact" came out. Great durable reliable repeatable guns, I would worry too much about the money already spent, water under the bridge.
