Any experience or recommendations with this gun?

My son and I are fairly new to USPSA shooting (Production). He's considering the XD Tactical. I handled one and it fit my small hands/short finger much better than my CZ 75B. We'll shoot it before we get serious.
He's shooting a Sig P239 with 10rd mags, and moving up 'fast'.
Maybe we both want one, but I'm not a big polymer/plastic fan.

Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

I won a slot in the USPSA Nationals a couple of years ago with one. More than capable gun for Production.

I'LL SAY! I value your opinions on the gun.
Trigger/action stock? Any probs getting mags holsters at reasonable prices?
Does Springfield treat customers okay? Any quirks/strong points?
Thanks.
I'm 40 years too late, but my son moves well.

You can use an XD in production and IF you get a good trigger job and a highly visible front site, the gun will be competitive. A mag well would be good to have too.

I wouldn't use Springfield to do the mod - they're expensive and will take too long. Talk to the more experienced guys that shoot IPSC with you and get the name of local pistolsmiths that know IPSC. Springfield won't give you the trigger pull you need to be competitive - a local guy might.

Bottom line, you can be competitive with an XD. Personally, I'm a Single Stack guy but we have a division for that.

What Jim said. Canyon Creek did over my XD40 for proddy.

The glock 34 will probably be marginally faster than the XD9 tactical due to the lower bore axis, but (I think) the best rich dettlehouser XD trigger is better than the best Glock trigger job.

availabilty of accessories is great. Two strikes against... glock sells a DAO trainer that perfectly mimics the trigger on the factory one, so you can use a laser training system at home. Also, springfield won't sell certain replacement parts, so if it breaks in the field you are pretty screwed. (that last point may have changed, but it was true 6 months ago)
