I am wanting to buy an XD Subcompact 40 or S&W M&P 40 for everyday carry. Which is the best choice in you guy's opinion?

Toss a coin, or do eeny meeny miney mo....

Or shoot both if you can and pick the one that YOU like better. They are both outstanding firearms.

I haven't handled an XD but I own an M&P9c and it is a great gun. The ability to change the backstraps to suit the pistol to your own hand is a great feature and I prefer the trigger and grip angle over the Glock counterparts.

I own an XD 40SC and a M&P40c and while the Xd is a nice firearm and shoots nice, it's "snappy" that's the only complaint. the M&P however feels like your shooting the M&P 9c. I can tell no difference in recoil from the 9 to the 40. Once my mags get in I'll be carrying the M&P40c all the time. Quick target reacquisition as well.

I own a M&P compact in .40 and a XD sub-compact in 9mm. I really like both pistols a lot. The only thing I don't care for on my XD9sc is its old-style finish (pre-Melenite XD finish). I like to conceal carry (in Kydex IWB holsters) the M&P40c a little bit more than my XD9sc, but they both pretty much conceal about the same (how they print under a shirt). I carry both with mag pinkie finger extensions (the stock factory extension on the M&P40c and a Pearce +0 extension on the XD9sc). Either pistol would serve you very well.

I'm also thinking about getting a compact .40 and have seen almost nothing but good about the M&P compact. I like to pocket carry, and have heard the M&P's have short, light, Glock-like triggers, which I find unsafe for pocket carry (I carry with one in the pipe). I much prefer a standard DAO trigger. How are the M&P's triggers?

Thanks, Lou

The M&P's trigger is very similar, in pull weight and function, to that of a Glock's or a XD's, so I would not advise pocket carrying it without a proper holster that completely covers the trigger guard area. It does not have a long heavy trigger pull like the Kahr and the Kel-tec pocket pistols do, plus the M&P compact is a tad large for pocket carry (IMHO), maybe in a cargo pants type pocket you could pull it off. I'll try to post a few pics of some of my pistols tonight (one with the M&P40c next to the XD9sc and another with the M&P40c next to the G26, so you all can get a size comparison between the pistols).

Yes, I would say that the M&P is contraindicated for holsterless pocket carry. Of course, I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying anything that way, really.

Both are very very good guns. Handle one of each, and be sure to try each of the M&P's three backstraps. The trigger on both guns can be cleaned up nicely (The M&P will get non-gritty through simple use...it's kinda ugly out of the box).

Thanks for the info. I do pocket carry with a holster, but the holster gets bent and squeezed whenever I sit, so I am staying with the DAO trigger guns. I've had very good experience with my Kahr PM9 for pocket carry, and am considering the CW40, PM40 or P45 for a little more oomph. I particularly like the P45 for it's size and because I'm a .45 fan. I believe all the poly Kahrs have a DAO trigger.

I have both in 9mm. I much prefer the M&P (although I've had the XD for a while and the M&P is the new toy). Its really whichever works best for you, though.

I like both, but the M&P fits better. I was actually looking to buy an XD until I played with the M&P and it has since replaced the XD on the "list."

Please let me know where can I get the rubber grips that you have in your pics for the XD Subcompact and M&P Compact 40. Those pics look very nice and the grips look comfortable.

Thanks,

They look like Pachmyer slip-ons. Hogue makes a similar product.
