I bought an XD9 service model in December and have been very happy with it so far. I shot my first IDPA match with it Saturday and did better than I have ever done.
I read on another forum that XD guiderods and springs rountinely break or wear out at about 2000 rounds fired. I find this hard to believe and would be surprised to find it to be true. Does anyone have any knowledge of this or have any experience with XDs that would confirm or contradict this rumor?

All recoil springs wear out eventually in any gun. Most people recommend replacing recoil springs every 2000 rounds or so.

Go to Pistol Gear.com and buy a "Don's Guide Rod and Spring for XD" and replace the captive spring assembly with a standard guide rod and spring. Only costs $25 and makes maintenance a lot easier.

I'm currently at over 9,000 rounds in my Service XD9 (100% stock) and it's only beginning to show some wear on the guide rod, but nowhere near a level that worries me about failure. I ordered a Don's Guide Rod just to have around (and see how it affects the action of the gun - for curiosity's sake) but haven't received it yet. IMO, guide rod and/or spring failure at 2,000 rounds seems VERY premature.

I put one of Don's guide rods in my XD. It would definetly make the replacement of recoil springs easier since you just use 1911 recoil springs, but to make maintenance easier? No, sir! That thing is a PITA to put back together with the guiderod. The end of the rod is supposed to seat against a small edge on the barrel but it always likes to slip off and make putting the slide back on a tedious chore.

Good thing XDs don't need to be cleaned very often :D .

Thanks for the replies guys.

Quickdraw, I hope my gun does as good as yours. Your post is encouraging.

Its a pretty cool mod because it allows you to get different weight springs and swap them easily. That way you can control the felt recoil alot easier depending on which load you're using.

I just took a picture of the slight wear on my stock guide rod. I don't consider it to be a real issue yet, ,& this is after at least 9,000 rounds maybe even 10K. I don't keep a really accurate count, but I do shot it a lot.

It's not the rod you have to worry about, it's the spring. As the spring wears and slowly loses its tension it absorbs less and less of the recoil. Which means that over time the frame of the gun has to absorb more and more recoil. This can eventually cause the frame to crack. It's probably more of an issue with poly guns that steel guns as a poly frame probably isn't quite a durable as steel.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ muahahahahaha!!!!

I wouldnt worry about it my dad bought a glock in the early 90's and got more then 10000 rounds thru it and it still all stock and never jammed yet and guiderod and spring looks fine i have his glock now and i got more then a 1000 rounds thru it myself XD is made just as good

i have over double that number in my xd service model and i haven't had an issue to date, and from all the info gathering i do on the subject of xd's from other pwners and websites i haven't seen anything that would suggest that there is a problem. but like anything one day they will fail or not be as good as they once were. that might be 10,000 rds later or 1000,000 but i have had no issues with mine. just fyi i put a #22 dgr in mine and i love it.
