Those of you who shot all three, which do you rate the better one and why? I lean towards the G19 because it was the 1st plastic pistol and I figure more LEs use than any other.:)

I sold my G19 - I loved the finish, but the finger grooves didn't match my hand and the bottom of the slide wore a groove into the skin between my thumb and index finger.

I absolutely love my XD9, except for the finish. If I carry it IWB it rusts within a day. I hear the newer ones don't have that problem. The mags slide in and drop out with no stickiness or hesitation, the trigger reset is good, and accuracy is fine.

That said, I've never shot the S&W.

They're all so similar, but very different.

In terms of shootability for me, I liked the M&P9 very much. For some reason I couldn't even feel the recoil, and it definitely doesn't shoot like a poly gun.

Of the three, I liked the M&P the most, Glock comes in a close 2nd, and for some reason I never grew fond of the XD9. It's a great gun, but I never "clicked" with it.

The XD probably has the best out of the box trigger, but pointability and shootability goes to the M&P. Overall confidence, I'd probably stick with the Glock for it's long track record.

Sorta hard to explain, so many similar features such as they're all striker fired pistols, and the all triggers suck out of the box. It's just a matter of which sucks the most.

Pointability I've always had the Glock point high for me since I'm a high thumbs shooter. XD and M&P point fine for me.

I dunno, try em' all out. Same but different.

i own 2 of the three and while i just dont care for the m&p i love the other 2 the xd fits my hand better but im a bit more accurate with the g19 it could use a grip reduction

I've noticed alot of people including the Glock model whenever they compare w/ another pistol. So, my thinking is, if that is the standard, get that one. Me, I've had a G19 for a few years now & I've been happy w/ its performance.
So, I say, go w/ the G19 ;)

I've never shot any of them, but I like the M&P's ergonomics better than the Glock or XD. For me how a gun fits my hand is very important.

Hate the way Glocks feel in my hand, dislike the top-heavy imbalance of the XD. I've only shot those two, of them I'd definitely take the XD.

But I've held an M&P, and barring the worst trigger in the world, it would be my choice of the three.

Pretty much so. The Glock grip angle is just wrong for me (altho I like the package in general) and the XD is far too top-heavy.

The M&P is just right. :)

Thanks for the responses. From what I've read and gathered here and elsewhere, there is no clear choice. I asked one of the 1911 shooters at the local gun shop who has recently started carrying a G17, and he said it was available at a good price and went bang everytime. Decisions, decisions.:)

I'm unfamiliar with the M&P but with the XD and Glock, just choose the one that fits you the best. With those it just depends on what works for each individual since I don't think either one could really be classified as better than the other overall.

Does anyone know of any reliability tests done with the M&P?

My wife's favorite range pistol has always been my USPf 9mm, but I wanted to get her a "wonder-action" so that she had something that was point-and-shoot simple and didn't have to mess with safety levers and/or a initial DA trigger pull in a home defense situation. And of course one she enjoyed shooting as much as the USP and one that fit her hand well.

This was our process of discovery:

Glock - I never liked the grip angle or the ergonomics. Trust its reliability though, especially of the 17 and 19. My wife hated it.

XD - I hated the trigger. Surprisingly decent ergonomics. Crappy finish on the 9mm and .40 until the current production. My wife liked the XD.

M&P - Was almost set to buy the XD as I almost overlooked the M&P. Glad I didn't as it easily beat out the other two in my mind. The first mag I put through a rented M&P I was hooked. My wife really liked it too...much to my relief since the final decision was hers. We bought the fullsize for her. It is the perfect gun for her. Now I am awaiting the arrival of a compact I ordered. It will replace my P2000 as my carry gun.

Of course the above is just my opinion...as if that wasn't obvious.

the following is the opinion of a glock-biased person....

XD = love 'em, light, easy to carry, effective, fun. trigger not exactly to my liking and the finish was substandard (but they use tennifer now, so that's no longer an issue) but the price is reasonable and they have a lifetime warranty, love springfield-armory!!

S&W = ok, but still needs a few more years to mature, imo. price and availability of aftermarket goodies not there yet. essentially they are the "flavor of the month", so i'm taking the wait-n-see approach to this product line.

glock = what i carry, many upgrades and accessories available, great support.
though i am no fan of the G19. i'd rather get a G23 and then buy an aftermarket 9mm barrel (2 in 1!!) you alwasy have options with glocks.

humble suggestion: go to range and rent all three at once.
OR
get yourself a cheap 2nd gen. G19, live with it for a while. if you find it's not for you, there's always someone who will take it off your hands.

My 2 cents....

The M&P just fits in my hand like it was molded to it(after checking out the 3 different included back straps, went w/ the medium one)...

I agree with the guys who say try all 3 yourself though.

But I REALLY LIKE my S&W 9mm.......:D

Pud

Dumped my Glocks after getting the M&P. Sweetest shooting polymer gun available, shoots like a steel framed gun.

Hate to hijack the thread, but more than one have talked of the XD finish here. When did they change over to the new finish? Was it recently (this year) or two years ago? Thanks

Another M&P convert here. Sold my 19 and 17 after testing out my M&P 9. I bought my wife her own M&P 9 and picked up a compact as well. I think they are the best polymer pistol out right now. If they made a 10mm I'd sell my G20 as well.

I believe it was in early 2006. For some reason April is sticking in my mind but I could be wrong on that exact month.

Try as I might, I cannot reach the glock trigger as comfortably as the XD. It doesn't look like much difference, but it is. In fact, the 9mm Glock I was fondling today (the 19 I believe) I still couldn't reach comfortably, but the XD in .45 was just fine.

So I"m sure they are great guns, and if you find one that fits, you'll most likely be happy. But I would have to go with XD.

I miss the grip safety on the M&P, although it fits very nice as well.

My .02...M&P!

I've owned all three (well, the Glock was a .40) and by far my favorite is my M&P. My first handgun was an XD9 service model in stainless (no finish problems there). It was a nice gun, and what I decided on after renting a bunch of other semi-autos at the range. At this time, the M&P was not yet out. Next I bought the Glock, a G23, mostly on a whim. For some reason I felt I needed a .40 caliber weapon and, even though the Glock really didn't do it for me, I bought it. Never really liked it, aesthetics, ergonomics, the whole gamut. Finally, the M&P 9...when I rented it at the range, I was hooked and bought one on the spot. I shot one with the medium grip in and it felt wonderful, but then I tried the small and it was like it was a custom-molded grip just for me! Significantly less recoil than with the other two, though none were bad, even the G23 in the more powerful .40 S&W. I've since sold the XD and the G23 (the XD went to a good friend, as it was my first handgun and I wanted to keep it around for sentimental reasons). The M&P trigger has smoothed out immensely since I've had the gun (dry firing A LOT with snap-caps helps:) ). It's stainless steel under the finish they use, so there shouldn't be any kind of issues there. Plus, it's made in the good ol' USofA. It's the gun I'm most accurate with, by far, and I've yet to have a failure of any kind through nearly 2,000 rounds. I'm very impressed!

I never shot an MP but held one at a show, and I hated the way it felt in my hand. It felt all wrong to me. I owned an XD, sold it. I hate grip safeties. I've owned literally dozens of different types of handguns and sold them all and the only brand I keep coming back to and now sticking with is Glock. The 19 is my top choice out of the 3. I'm the opposite of alot of folks. Glocks for me feel the most natural in my hands. They just fit.

Recently did a serious comparison for myself for a compact 40. Glock 27, XD-40 Compact, M&P 40 Compact. The XD felt too bulky and top heavy in the slide - high bore axis, the M&P nestled down deep in my hand, nice low bore axis, not the least top heavy. The Glock (I already have a G29 in 10mm) felt OK but, kind of "blocky", of course. THe M&P grip felt like it was sculpted by a master craftsman for my hand - wonderful! I had read of how soft shooting the M&P 40 Compact is (perhaps due to frame springiness & low bore axis) and decided to get the M&P. Now with around 400 rounds of Speer 180 gr. Gold Dots through it, I'm just smitten with this pistol... I LOVE it. It has become my primary CCW. Highly recommend this gun!
