XDM 9 or Glock M17 or ?

I have always been a 1911 and revolver guy, i have decided to get a 9mm.
I am looking for opinions on both guns. Are there any other polymer guns in the $500-700 price range that i should also be looking at?
the gun will be mainly a range gun, target/plinking.

Do you prefer striker fired? As a 1911 guy you may prefer a gun with a hammer, or you may prefer something different, like a striker fired.

Walther P99AS or PPQ (which is just a P99 with a Glock-like trigger setup and revised aesthetics). Both are much nicer to shoot than a Glock or XD (much better triggers and better ergonomics, which are definite pluses for a range gun.)

And the nice thing is that that, should you decide to use it for defensive purposes, the P99 design is also uber-reliable and very durable.

XDm with the right backstrap is a beautiful thing. Only thing better is the .45 ACP XDm if you have large hands. The XDm is a 20 round pistol in 9mm. The ergonomics and sights are top notch.

IMHO the S&W M&P has the best ergonomics of any polymer gun. The adjustable palmswells really seem to make the gun comfortable for just about anyone. You should rent and shoot all the popular polymers. If you are a 1911 guy, you may not like the Glock grip angle. You will probably prefer the M&P and XD to the Glock.

Another idea is the CZ SP-01 Phantom. It's a polymer based on the all steel CZ SP-01, which happens to be my favorite non-1911 pistol.

I use a Glock G34 9mm in USPSA matches, (a longer version of the G17), for me at least it outperforms all the other poly pistols I have tried. The other polymer candidates were H&K P30L, S&W M&P PRO, Springfield Armory XD, XDm 5.25, and the FNP 9mm. I currently own SIG, Beretta, CZ and Colt 9mm pistols.The only 9mm pistol that I've shot that can out perform the G34 is my STI 1911, way more than your price point. Price of magazines, availability of upgrades like sights and triggers, plus ease of install of these upgrades really points to a Glock. I have about 12 magazines for the G34, installed Dawson Precision adjustable fiber optic sights and a Glocktriggers,com Apex trigger. The trigger alone, was the best investment, literally drop in easy, and it looses all the striker fired trigger creep, it will work on a G17 too. If your only choices are between the G17 and XDm, no comparison for me Glock all the way, M&P Pro a close second, CZ 75 SA third.

Lots too look at. There have been a lot of good guns made since the G17 which address the Glock's shortcomings. Namely the grip angle and the lack of manual safeties. But IMO these are the best features. The grip angle, in particular, makes the 9mm Glocks fast. (It makes the 40 cal Glocks fast, too, but also borderline painful). The XD, in particular has a much higher bore axis and straigher grip, and you'll feel the difference in recoil and muzzle flip. At least, I do. The XD handles recoil more like a SIG P-series. Once in tune with my Glocks, my rapid fire groups aren't all that much larger than the slow fire ones.

And then there's the ease of maintenance. I can disassemble and reassemble my Glock with one hand and a toothpick. All except for removing the cup and spring from the striker. The Glock is the only handgun I know of where removing and reassembling the extractor and firing pin/striker is as easy as an afterthought.

To disassemble the XD, you need to punch out 2 roll pins.

the local range does not have a XDM to rent at this time, they do have the glock 17 and S&W m&P available to rent. i might try to stop in there on my lunch break today.

I carried a Glock 19 daily for 5-6 years. I used it in IDPA competition, too. Never had a problem with it. Then I picked up an XDm at a gun shop.

Now I carry this. Xdm 3.8 9mm with a JPoint sight.
This is my idea of a 21st century carry gun!

Throw out what everyone says about ergonomics. Seriously. What's ergonomic for them won't be for you. I've read numerous posts of people saying "I use a 1911 because it's not too fat." Well, I don't use a 1911 because it's too skinny. So if the gun is ergonomic to YOU, go for it.

Specifically looking at XDm vs. Glock:
XDm holds 2 more rounds from the standard magazine. You can easily find extended G17 mags that hold 33 rounds, but those would be hard to carry. If you're not carrying, that would be fun.
XDm does not require you to pull the trigger to break the gun down. This is easier, and I think safer.
XDm has a grip safety, Glock doesn't. It doesn't bother me either way. You may consider the grip safety to be an extra thing that can break (in that case, go Glock), or you may consider something that may save your life (go XDm), or - like me - it won't impact your decision.

Overall, they're both very similar. Glock has a bigger reputation for reliability, but that's only because it's older. The XDm is very reliable as well.

I've had my XDm 9mm for a few years now with zero problems. It would definately be 'go to' gun, in my opinion. I've added fiber optic sights and X-Treme rubber grips. Here's a pic of the grips:

Shoot the glock before you buy it, if you have meaty hands, as I do, you might get slide bite from them.

From personal experience i have found my xd is head and shoulders above a glock and easier and quicker to break down to boot.

You know they make fat grips for 1911's, right? Some wood grips even have finger grooves.

I use the holster that came with the gun. I tried holsters from Blade-Tech and Comp-Tach, but didn't like them.

Ah yeah, thanks. Now that I think about it, the sight is mounted far enough back that it shouldn't interfere with any holster. I have the same gun, by the way. Very nice.

I own about 20 handguns from .45 cap to .25 caliber. I prefer pistols that have low recoil and are accurate. I like glock 17 for it's low recoil and beretta m9 for low recoil and reliability. I have a kimber .45acp that is very accurate and reliable but it sounds scarier when I fired because of heavier caliber. CZ P07 is very accurate for me. Desert Eagle is so hard to fire accurately but I have one just to play with. I have several CZ, several beretta, several glock models. I like the glock for lighter weight and ease of field strip. Beretta is easy to field strip too. The cz models are hard to field strip. Hk models are nice too. But I will go with glock 17 for the range/home defense and glock 19 for carry daily and sig 230 or sig 232 for light duty carry.
