In the shingling hatchet thread I mentioned picking up a couple of hatchets at a yard sale last year. The other went to the barn and was even more out of sight out of mind than the shingling hatchet, but again looking for a hammer I noticed this handle. I was putting up nails in the barn to run a hay bale string across several up rights for my daughter to hand more horse show ribbons from ( minor Daddy brag there).

Anyhow it had a blue painted head at one point, worn off the forward part now. On onside it reads "MADE IN SWEDEN" and on the other "1 1/4" the only other marks are the hole in the butt of the handle ( I plan to attempt to line it with a bit of copper pipe) and the handles on both sides have impressed diamond shapes in a regular pattern that looks like some one laid a heavy wood rasp on the handle and smacked it with a hammer or some such.

Any idea what I got?

Looks like a good little piece. How long is that handle you have mounted?

That is the handle that was on it when I bought it and it measures 15 inches (about 38.25 CM) from the eye or the head to the tip of the toe. The top of the handle is not flush with the eye however and sits a bit less than 1/4 inch below the top of the eye and has some sort of what appears to be epoxy or some such over the end of the wood grain.

Despite the rust specs it is very sharp.

I am thinking I will cobble up a cover of some sort and toss it in the truck given my experience on the kid's last scout camp of no one having a hatchet.
