I have a model 57-1.

ser # AUC20##

Is this stainless or nickle?

I thought the stainless were 6## series in the S&W scheme.

It is NOT pinned or recessed like my blue M57.... so it has gotten me a little curious.

One one hand I know nickle plating went out a while back, yet this one is not numbered 657. It clearly is stamped mod. 57-1

To me it seems to be a little brighter than other stainless guns I have seen. But not owning one to compare with it..it has me wondering.

So what do you guys say?

bob

EDIT: I have figured out that it is nickle.....was represented as stainless...now I know that part anyhow.

You do indeed have a nickle plated model 57-1. Looks like it was made in early 1987.

In the case of the Model 57 the -1 indicated an engineering change. In this case it was the discontinuance of the pinned barrel and recessed chambers.

If it was stainless it would be marked 657.

S&W stopped using pinned barrels in 1981/82 and stopped recessing the cylinders on canterfire magnum cylinders in 1982.
I have a blued 57 from 1981 that is a transitional model. It has recessed chambers without having a pinned barrel.
I have a 629 from the same year that is the same way, recessed but not pinned.

Yeah nickel plated. If it was nickle plated and held up let me know where they are doing it so cheap. :D
