You Guys are Scaring Me!!!

I would jump on this opportunity in less than a heartbeat. Sounds like a store that I would prefer to shop in myself. Having worked in a retail (grocery) store in my youth, I know for a fact that the general public has some idiots that are a pain to deal with. You also have many wonderful people who are a joy to meet. I myself don't have a problem with paying a slightly higher price if I get good value, ie: better service, better quality products, a helpful and knowledgible staff, etc. Sounds like a cool gun shop. Best wishes for ya. Scott

Sounds like a good deal, how about a trial arrangement where you work a few Saturdays (while you still have your other job) and see how you like it?

But it seems like this field can be very contentious and the customer base can range from very nice to horrible!

That's just retail. A lot of times there are a lot of horrible customers you have to deal with just to get to know the handful of really nice customers that make working retail rewarding.

I am not a sloppy person. I am clean shaven and have a haircut every three weeks so my appearance does not indicate I am a low-life there to just browse and not spend any money.

You'll often find a lot of people that have PLENTY of money to spend are some of the "sloppiest" looking people. The way someone looks should never indicate the kind of service they deserve. The way they act in the store on a regular basis should. What puts me off the most is when I walk into a store to spend my hard earned money, and no one will acknowledge my existance because I have a beard (or some other form of facial hair), longish hair, and don't wear "quality" clothes. I dress up to go to work, not when I'm out and about.

My point is this: gun shops (and book stores, IMHO) are different from most types of retail operations. What gun shops and book stores share is that each is an entryway into an entire world.

This statement is very true. Specialty retailers, not big boxes, are gateways into cultural worlds. People go to specialty retailers for expertise in whatever their specific product is. Customers expect good customer service, and a good knowledge about what is being sold. This is why they come there, and most often then not, spend a little more per item than they would if they could get it a big box retail outlet.

I work at a bookstore in the music department. But I'm also still a consumer, and I treat my customers with AT LEAST the same quality service I expect from other retailers. The more personal I can make the buying experience, the more I know my customers will come back and spend their money and be happy with their purchases.

What a deal...

As others said, serving the public can be a big PITA. But, the general public doesn't wander into gunshops. Sounds like a great opportunity!!

WOW!!!

I was hoping for a few positive comments, but you guys have floored me!

I am planning on taking this job. I want to get more active in the firearms field when I retire (from the Federal government) and this will allow me to both teach new shooters and work selling firearms while expanding my knowledge.

Tarpley G. - "When I, as a customer of your store, come in the door, acknowledge me."

Yep, that is the first step towards a happy customer. I have seen more than a few clerks and sales personnel fail in this. The rest of your comments are right on also. Thanks.

fish2xs - "Comrade FPrice, I too am from PRMA and I buy from 4 Seasons in Woburn."

Four Seasons is a good store but WAY TOO SMALL! Everytime I have gone there I have to step outside just to change my mind! Good customer service when they finally get around to you. I think their prices are pretty good for this state. I'm about 90 miles west of them.

Kharn - "Sounds like a good deal, how about a trial arrangement where you work a few Saturdays (while you still have your other job) and see how you like it?"

I will be doing classes once I get my rating. But the retail side is going to have to wait for a little bit.

And for all the rest of you wonderful guys, thanks for your support!

The gunshop I go to and buy from most frequently is not the closest to my home (it's almost an hour each way), it dosen't have the widest selection (It's one of those "I can order whatever you want" type places), and it dosen't have the lowest prices.

But the manager is honest and the service is the best!

Go for it!
