For me it was a tie between Gewehr 98 derived Mausers and Mosins. I guess I'd have to go Mosin only because even though I've shot a few mausers, I've actually owned a Mosin 91/30 and have a lot more trigger time with it. The Garand and the Lee-Enfield tie for second and the SKS a close third.

Mosin M44 and M38. I've got a Russian M44 that had the bayonet ground off and was refinished at the arsenal, thereby turning it into a defacto M38. It's got all the great qualities of a Mosin, the flawless reliability and robust build quality, cheap ammo, etc. But it's far lighter and better balanced to the point of actually being a practical rifle for real world use. And that short barrel results in a lot of noise and flash with surplus ammo which makes it even more fun. The boom and 2ft+ fireball that shoots out the muzzle even in broad daylight is enough to gather a crowd of onlookers at the range.

I'm also one of those weird people for which the Mosin is ergonomically favorable, and that combined with the manageable but noticeable recoil means I can shoot hundreds of rounds at a range session and not get tired of it, or even lose the grin off my face.

Not only is that little Mosin my favorite milsurp, it's my favorite firearm in my collection(around 20 firearms)and never misses a range day.

I have a Mauser with the receiver built in '41. Rough looking, but a nice shoot. Wouldn't mind getting an M1 Garand.

I have a soft spot for U.S. military rifles. I've come across three or four in the last year. An M1903 is next on my list. That's if an SMLE doesn't call my name first...

M1 great firearm, love the platform ,reliable and solid as a rock ! Nestolgic looks and a battle proven weapon that helped win the war .

I voted for the Garand. It is accurate and reliable.
The 98k, m1 carbine, and SKS are good too, but the Garand gets the nod from me.
Just my 2 pennies.

I could only vote for one, so it was the Garand. Mosin and Enfield were close seconds though. I've never had my hands on a Mauser so my choice is a little biased to what I have.

I voted for the SVT-40 because that's one of the rifles I'd love to have above all others (except for a Garand...). It's like the SKS's big brother.

FAL for me. Probably not as milsurp or traditional as some others, but I tend to gravitate to semi autos more than bolt actions for historical battle rifles.

My favorite is an as-issued 03 Springfield. I've worked up a mild cast bullet load for it that is good to 200 yards from a rest if I do my job. Makes for a pleasant target session. I want to develop similar loads for the other bolt action mil-surps.

Torn between the M1 Garand and the Springfield Model 1903. Went with the '03 just because I love the design and overall balance of the rifle.

I wanted to choose a few:
Garand, sks, Mosin, Springfield 1903, psl, akm, ar's ( I know the vast majority o the market are commercial but there have been Vietnam era uppers for sale), 1911's and m9's.

Can't forget those pistols!

in my lifetime, which has been a long time, I have had and shot everyone on the list except for the Steyr M95, most all were enjoyable, especially having them when they were less expensive 60s-90s My all time favorite is the 1903 & A3, to me they are an art form, my second choice would be a Swedish 1894 carbine purchased in 1963 for 34.95 at the local surplus store, now those were the days!!!

I probably should have voted SKS. It's a useful outdoor rifle. Mine's taken two deer over the years. Good caliber for around here. Love that 154 Tula soft point stuff.

BUT, I voted other. My Hakim is just too fun to impress the unknowing with. I never did get any MG38 magazines for it, just the stock 10 rounder in it. It belches out 8x57 with accuracy and speed, sorta reminds me of a BAR. :D It's heavy and LONG, not very practical for anything useful, but it's fun and it only cost me 80 bucks back 23 years ago.

I guess I have the only vote for the Model of 1917.

I own and enjoy shooting Garands, Carbines, 1903s and A3s, Enfields, and Mausers, but I put off getting a 1917 because I thought it was an ugly duckling. Then I found a Remington with a great bore and really liked the way it felt and the way it worked. Now I shoot it more than any of the others. No accounting for tastes, I guess.:)

I suppose my choice of screen name makes my first love obvious, but I also have a slight Enfield addiction as well as some Mausers and others to make a well-rounded collection.

Hmmm .... how about a "all of the above option".

I give the nod to the Finnish M39 Mosin. Its accurate, ammo is cheap and it will work forever, in any conditions found on earth (that a person can survive in).

Difficult to rank, but probably the Enfield #5 "Jungle Carbine" for its combination of power and handiness.
My pair are pretty accurate, considering some of the Internet reports which might indicate otherwise.

Were certain ammo much cheaper, the FN 49.

There is no 1914/P14 on the list but I suppose you could just lump the 1917 in with it.

Im also for the 1917.

Toss up between k98 and 1903. K98 has cool straight pull bolt and good surplus ammo. 1903 because it's an all around American Classic.

My FAVORITE is an L1-A1, but it's by no means my best SHOOTER. THAT would be my Vz24. My poor old "worn out" Garand doesn't know that it's not supposed to shoot as well as it does, and is only kept from doing better by its owner's 52-year-old eyes.
