Your choice for .243 powder

i most be doing something wrong with Varget because it is by far the worst powder in all but one of my rifles & even in that one it's no better then anything else.

varget works the best at the top end, and I normally use fairly heavy bullets...85 and up.. try a top end load, it is the most accurate in .243, 308, and 223 for me.. varget likes to be hotter.. not max or over just upper end

I can't get anymore in the case in the .223Rem. The 30-06 seemed to tolerate it the best but nothing tighter then 1.25" with the bullets I tried it with.

For my 243Win I am using the 65 V-Max & haven't tried any other projectile so far & I'm not sure there is any reason to.

I think I discovered a new favorite last night. I used some Ramshot Hunter for the first time last night. It gave me the best groups I have ever shot with that rifle. I was using some blems or seconds, I guess they were probably Hornady BTSP 100 gr. The bullets were amazingly close in weight I noticed, no more than 0.2 gr away from the 100 gr range. The best group was with 41.0 gr, not close to the max at all. But the 40.0 and 42.0 were also really nice groups. I am going to zero in on that range with finer increments. And I'm going to try the same powder for my 95 gr SST bullets too.

I can't get anymore in the case in the .223Rem.

there are about five of us in my "social shooting circle" of friends.. we have excellent accuracy with 26.0 gr of varget behind a 55gr pill.. I run 24.5 behind a 75gr hornady bthp, with excellent results

243 powder

Hi all, In my rem700 I use IMR 4831, for 100 gr Sierra Game king and 87gr Hornady both will hold under a inch at 100. The 100gr at 2930 and the 87 at 3230. The 100gr GK when put in the right place is good Whitetail medicine. My son got his first buck this year, shot was a little high but he dropped right there.

I'm starting to get worried about my rifle. Every one here says just about anything will work in a 243. My son has a Browning Stainless Hunter in 243. I have gone through the chart from min to max at .3 grn increments with 7828 and 4064 and am working my up with Varget now using Hornady 100 grn BTSP and 75 grn VMax. I will say the Varget has given the best results. I have gotten a couple of 5 shot MOA groups (with 32.5 grns if I remember correctly). I hope we can do better than that in that he traded a 1/4 MOA Stainless Stalker in 270 for this rifle.

Try different powder

My son's Rem doesn't like 4350 it shoots all over the place, but most people love it in a 243, MY 308 doesn't like rem cor-locks shoots 2" and sometimes bigger groups. But with Sierra,Hornady, or Nosler she will shoot under a inch if I do my part. Or try different bullet, don't think it is the Gun, some guns are just more picky then others. But not all off the shelf guns will be a tack driver, 1/4 MOA is a lot to ask for .

I know I may be asking a little much, but until the last loads of today about 1.75 MOA is the best I"ve got. with the worst being about 2.75 MOA with the 7828 I think. I know it's not the norm but my SS Browning in 270 will tear one ragged hole with Varget and 140 grn SPBT Serria's. That has spoiled me. And like I said Logan's would shoot 1/4 MOA with Hornady 140grn BTSP and 7828. Maybe I have come to expect too much from Browning, but they have served me well for 25 years. I've got a 270 Bar that shoots MOA with factory stuff. I expect a little more from a bolt gun.

270 bar

Thats funny I too have a 270 BAR that will shoot MOA with factory stuff, don't give up try different stuff. You will find what it likes, that is why we handload to get the best out of the gun.

Varget now using Hornady 100 grn BTSP and 75 grn VMax. I will say the Varget has given the best results.

What is your twist? 100's may not work.. are you noticing any difference in groups between the 75s and 100's? also has anyone other than you shot the gun? I know this sounds insulting and I don't mean that, but I have had a few rifles that just about anybody but me could shoot moa or less with, and I could put one of those guns down pick my 243 and shoot ragged holes.. I have a weatherby mkV that I can't get under about 1.5-2 moa at 100yds my bro can shoot 3/4 all day with my handloads... me and the gun just don't like each other I guess...

sldo you may try running some jb down the barrel.. I have seen that clean up groups.. a 243 should not be that hard to get to shoot, especially a fairly new rifle.. check your crown..

1 in 10 twist and yes they do tighten up a little with the 75 grn VMax. I have some 95 and 87 gr bullets ordered. I want something at least that heavy in that he will be using it for Alabama whitetails along with all sorts of varmits. There has been 3 trigger pullers all getting the same results. Me being Dad I thought I could out shoot him But not so. He's got younger eyes and a steadier hand than I.

Long 100gr boat tail 6MM bullets can be a problem in a 1in10" twist, especially if you are not hotrodding them. You'll often find that the shorter, flat based 100gr bullets will stabilize in that twist.
Most often, any bullet weight under 90gr will be fine in that twist, be it boat tail or flat base.
IMR4064 and it's near twin Varget should be better with the lighter bullets.
Have faith in the Brownings.

Why does it have to be that heavy? I there a law in AL that requires a certain weight projectile? Are you concerned the bullet wont retain enough mass & weight to travel deep enough?

I suggest using the bullet the gun can reliably shoot. If there is a law dictating weight then maybe switch guns. If your looking at retention then buy a bullet that is built to hold together at the speed you want to push it or push the bullet at a speed it will stay together.

The faster you push the bullet the more it becomes frangible.

If none of this helps you maybe it will help the next guy reading it.

well that is good at least you know it is the rifle.. I have had really good results with the 75gr sierra varminters and the 85gr tsx.. try I run varget.. and hybrid 100... try some sierra.. your gun may like 'em
