Your favorite targets at the range?

Depends on which range I'm at, and what my purpose is in being there.

Most public ranges in my area have a paper target only rule for the standard ranges (specialty ranges vary). If I'm just out in the desert plinking into a hillside, I use targets that remain more or less intact, so I can clean the mess up before I leave. Plastic water jugs filled with water work well. They explode fairly spectacularly, but don't leave an unsightly mess behind when you leave.

Steel sillouettes. they are my favorite. our local range has a whole bunch of them at different yards for hand gun. Then they have them all the way out to 700 yards for rifle. Not that i can shoot that far. eyes are not as good as they used to be.

Here is my list of favorite targets, in order of preference:

Watermelon - especially for 500S&W!
Undrinkable Soda Cans - like the generic stuff sold at Sam's Club
Shaving Cream Cans
Whip Cream Cans
Steel Targets, Gongs
Cars/trucks - especially for 50BMG!
Tannerite - something on my wish list that I have not been able to try yet

I use altoid tins a lot, because altoids are my crack.

But, mostly.... not being an expert marksmen I like to use regular paper targets to make the many adjustments I need.

Cheap old cameras, obsolete/broken cellphones, and pumpkins.

We are allowed to make a little mess, so long as we clean it all up. Yes, a few slivers of plastic probably get away.

The pics, not the cats. My wife won't let me shoot those. :cuss:

Propane tanks
Spray paint cans shoot like a rocket when you hit the bottom of them.
Full Soda cans.
Bottle caps or empty 22lr hulls.
Skoal cans.

for my .22lr. i like to shoot at 9mm brass. here is one dead center on the primer from 50ft (not a lucky shot i did it 3 times) IMG_4318.jpg :) man i love my .22!!!

+1 for propane tanks. Also the small camping butane cylinders.

I love shooting any container filled with water with my .17

Also for the .17 and .22 - golfballs. Throw a golfball out to about 25 yards and see how far you can hit it. Gets challenging out past about 100 yds

Unused (over-ripe) fruits and veggies. I shot an orange with my .22 magnum, and the whole area smelled like orange juice for a while, very pleasant. All I could find of the orange were a few little thumbnail-sized chunks of the peel, scattered over a wide area.

Ice cubes or frozen water bottles or pint milk cartons - give the satisfying shatter of glass and keep your conscience clear.

I don't go to the "range" because all they let me shoot is paper...but out in the woods I can never find enough propane tanks to shoot! It's nice though, often at old camp sites you'll find a few empty propane tanks laying around. :)

well at the range in town it is paper. and out of range it is water jugs and campian signs with stickers on them easy to clean up and easy to put in . but we found a great one you take an old tomato cage and put a paper yard debris bag over it try it you will like it

2 coyotes. one just at closing at the 300 yd range with the AR10 and one at 150ft range trying to kill the range cat last summer about 6am with my 40 sub. I also like to shoot into packed snow, the bullets come out almost perfect.

I just hang up a blank piece of 8 X 11 paper - or, if you prefer, there's a website that lets you print bullseyes on your paper.
