This is kind of vague for now, but, my son calls from Alaska (USAF) and tells me he found a "deal" on a S&W 9mm semi-auto. It comes with (2) 16 round clips, case and cleaning kit..Two tone model, $300, no tax....He's going back today to get the model number which I'll post once I get it....Now, I haven't considered buying a S&W before this so are they any good in your opinion? Compared to a SIG or anything else in a 9mm semi-auto?

Thanks,
Jim

Sounds like a Sigma.

My thoughts are they are a cheap Glock knock off, and I dislike Glocks so my opinion is considreably low of them. But then this is my opinion. I had one for a while, it worked but fely ver Lorcinish and was the least accurate gun I have ever had.

If it is a Sigma ... the recent production pistols have actually received some favorable reviews (even one in American Handgunner). I've only shot one magazine through one (a friend picked on up at a gun show; he says it's doing well with a few hundred rounds through it) the DAO trigger didn't feel too bad to me, and though I wasn't shooting for accuracy, it seemed to shoot acceptably. The pistol felt better than a Glock to me in the hand, pointed and balanced well and there was negligible recoil.

If price is the most important factor to your son, it might be a good deal. But for only a little more cash -- if one is wanting a DAO polymer hi-cap 9mm -- take a look at the Taurus 24/7 or Springfield Armory XD.

If its a two-tone, it may be a metal framed gun.

Around here (NC), used S&W autos frequently sell in the $250 - $350 range, and they're generally quite good guns. (Police trade-ins, etc.)

The metal-framed guns are solid performers and hold up well.

The original SIGMAs were nightmares for many folks, but over the past 6-7 years, S&W has gotten the bugs worked out, and recent production SIGMAs are getting pretty good reviews.

But in any event, the price is not a great price -- just so so. He could buy a new Ruger P95 or P97 in the same price range and have at least as good a gun, and unbeatable warranty/service. (Ruger doesn't have a written warranty, but they stand behind their weapons...)

Ditto what Walt said. 3rd gen S&Ws are great bargains around here due to the heavy influx of LEA trade-ins to the market. Rugged, dependable, accurate and generally in very nice condition. Lots of aftermarket support too.

Love my 4586 from some Idaho LEA. $300 with Hogues and two mags.

I bought a Sigma in .40 last January, "liked" it so much I gave it to my father. It wasn't a bad gun by anymeans, just I couldn't get very accurate with it and it bit pretty hard in .40. I paid $279 new at a K's Merchandise. Dad loves it, I just need to find a all steel framed .40 auto.

Thanks for the information,views....The thing is, I'm not sure yet that it is a Sigma, they are being sold on base and to move the stock, they dropped the price by $150 to $300......Hopefully he will be back to me today.

If it isn't a SIGMA, he should jump for it as quickly as he can. If it is a SIGMA, he should run the other way as quickly as he can.

The Sigma VE series, either 9mm or .40S&W, has a very spongy trigger. I've shot a couple in the last few years. I would not buy a Sigma series.

Well, I just bought the SW9VE because it looked and talked like a glock, but felt better to hold than a glock. I've read nothing but good reviews about it. I just hate it when people ride on the coat-tail of a name without trying other products. Doesn't matter what gun it is to me, I'm gonna put at least 1200-1500 rounds through it..If it jams before then like one sig I had..I no longer want that weapon. But to each his own. As long as the customer support is there or you know a good smith, buy what you want. I do. I have some off the wall stuff and they've never let me down.

I think that S&W is on of the handful of companies that build a good, solid, dependable pistol. I recommend that people that are getting their first pistol to get one that fits them and if they can fire one first that's a big help.

Their Performance Center guns are comparable to best pistols and revolvers made.

Around here the Sigma seems to be the gun of choice for the Criminal Clan! :what: Sigma's are sold any where from $269-369 in my part of the state! The caliber of choice seems to be .40, my local store can't keep them in stock! was present on friday looking at colt's when a group of thugs came in and three of them purchased sigma's in you guessed it .40! I would suggest you pass, there are way better guns available for a little more money!

If it has a 16-round mag, it's most likely a Sigma, S&W's polymer-framed Glock knockoff.

They're serviceable, with the later generations being a lot better than the first ones. If it's a two-tone, it's probably a Sigma VE model, which is a later generation.

$300 is OK, but not a screaming steal. Around these parts, they sell new for not much more than that.
