your hot loads for .338 win mag

would like to get an honest 2700fps out of my 24" barrel and 250gr sierra game kings.

Im loading H4350 with F215 and getting 2600fps. Im happy for moderate shooting but I'd like to use a hot load for big critters when needed.

anyone have a reciepe for a hotter load but still "safe" in terms of loading. I've been looking but no real luck. I prefer heavier bullets like the 250 v.s. 225or lighter if you must know.

Try a slower burning powder like H4831 or RL22 or something in that burning range and you can get that extra 100 fps, but I have never seen an animal hit in the right place with a .338 Winnie say, "It was only moving 2600 fps, I am gonna get up and run away now" .

i've found rl-17 and rl-19 easy to work w/ and predictable for working up loads. however... why not just get a 375 ruger and save the wear and tear of a hot load? 375 ruger will run 300's into the 2700 f/s range (even the short-barrelled alaskan) and you won't risk tearing anything up doing it.

If the load you are now using is accurate I don't think a few extra FPS will do you much good. I think for "big critters" the bullet you use is more important than the velocity it's going. A premium 250gr bullet traveling 2600 fps in a .338 will take any animal in the Americas and many in Africa too. Heck, there isn't anything in North America that can't be taken with a 30-06 and a premium bullet.

thanks for the replies guys! I'll do what i can and love the responses! totally true too. I'd done some testing 2 weekends ago and a 250gr at 2600fps will easily go clean though a 1/4" 10lbs steel plate at 100yrds away!

anyone use Retumbo powder? they claim 40-100fps faster with similar loads....hmm..

IMR 4831 should get a 250 grain bullet up to 2700 fps from a 24" barrel without even pushing the red line.

I don't do FPS, but I have killed a truck load of elk/moose with 210 Nosler over 75 grains of 4831 (H and I both ended up at 75)
