M16A2, M9, M2, Mossberg 590. Depending on where I was, and what the particular detail I was on. Generally it was just my M16, but when I was attached with one of the line companies (I was Motor T Mech in a tank Batalion) it was not uncommon for the CO to want everyone to be issued an M9. When with my parent company, and filling my primary role, I had my Ma Duce
, mounted on a truck. Before being promoted to Corperal, I had the pleasure of standing guard many of nights at ammo dumps, and usually was issued a 12 guage. I loved my M2, but the shotgun range was always a blast too. Over all, I couldnt complain about any of the weapons I was issued, although I wouldnt have been upset if they still issued the 1911A1s instead of the Berettas, but that is more personal prefference than any functional issues with the M9.

USAF LE-K9, late 70's-early 80's.
Issued----XM-177 and S&W Mod 10.
Preferred---I was perfectly happy with the XM-177 but I often exchanged my privately owned Mod 13 for the Mod 10. Side by side they were identical, and the .357 125gr JHP filled me with MUCH more confidence than the issued .38spl 130gr FMJ did. I would have been in a world of trouble if I'd ever used it and had gotten caught but at least I would have been around to BE in that trouble.

Went through a slew. Up until recently, there was a somewhat flexible policy on handguns.
Start: Any 357/38 DA in six inch. Bought a M28-2 . Changed to a M19 in chrome, then M66, all 6" barrell. Then the specs allowed a M686 in 4" which I bought. then we talked the municipality into providing M659 if we supplied them, which we did to the entire department. The policy opened up a bit to eventually allow 6906, then the third gen 5906, 6906, 4006 and 4013. with the demise of the S&W SA thired gen. line, we switched to the Glock 23 for all duty use for new hires for the past four years or so. The older S&W 2nd. and 3rd. gen are still in service for a few of the older guys but they are disappearing as they retire.
Off duty was any DA 38/357/380/9mm or 40S&W after approval and qualification.
Available for use are AR15/MP5/Rem. 870 and a Steyr SSG 308 for qualified personnel.

Back before the Earth's crust cooled, we used M14s, Colt 1911 model 70s, and Remington 870s on my destroyer in the Navy.
Generally we used the M14s and .45s for open deck watches in foreign ports.
Quarterdeck watches generally used .45s.
We also had M60s. The gunner's mates kept small arms lockers in a couple different areas around the ship, and cleaned and maintained the weapons for the security watch-standers.
We only were issued small arms at the beginning of a watch or during a security drill or breach.
IIRC, armed watch personnel had to qualify semi-annually.
I liked the duty carry choices. Still do.

originally issued - a long time ago - S&W model 10. We could carry a .357 as long as we had .38 ammo in it. So, I swapped to a 681 (still have it).
Now? FN FNP-40. Not too bad. Personally owned 870 for the shotgun.

If given a choice: Stay with the 500/590's, for a sidearm change to the SW M&P45 with thumb safety, and would stick with the M4, but instead of the M14 would have liked an M700 precision set up for a bigger bore rifle (compared to 5.56)

Had a US Rifle Cal 30 M1 (Garand) for 6 or 7 mos. Later on we had some instruction and practice sessions with the Thompson SMG, the M1 Carbine and some just about worn out 1911 A1's. This was all with USN.

Army issue rifles: CAR-15, M-4, M16A2
I favored the M-4 due to the light weight, compact size, rail system, and the full auto capability (though rarely used).
Army "issue" pistol: The M-9, imo, is a P.O.S. which I loathed. I would have replaced it with either a 1911, or a 9mm glock / XD / M&P / CZ in a heart beat.

LE Carry-At different times I have been issued and mandated to carry a Beretta 92FS 9mm and then a Beretta 96D Brigadier .40. Switching agencies, I was issued my choice of a Glock 22 or 23, but we were given the option of carrying just about anything we wanted that we personally owned and qualified with. As for long rifles, I have been issued an M-4 carbine (tri-burst version even for patrol) and Remington 870 police model.
Military- Currently still in the military. We are issued M-4 carbines and M9's (Beretta 9mm). As the unit armorer, I also take care of all of the M249's, M240's, M203's, NVG's, red dots, etc.

It did the job. I think the BHP MKIII is one of the best ergonomically designed handguns.

Ideal would be a folding stock AK, or pistol caliber carbine. I was a heavy truck driver attached to Artillery battalion, so I wanted something small. The Army had a great concept with the .30 Carbine, should have modernized and kept it going.

I was issued either an M16A1 or a 1911A1. Never both at the same time. It depended on what my job in the Weapons Platoon was which weapon I was issued. The gunner and assistant gunner on the 81mm mortar were issued the .45s and everyone else had rifles.
I never knew anyone in the infantry companies I served in to be issued both a rifle and a pistol at the same time.
