I work on a Military base as a contactor.
My boss went to register our vehicle for an on post pass. Now this is a daily driver vehicle we use for business, we need the pass to get back on post when we have business that takes us on and off post.
When registering the vehicle he showed his Texas Drivers Licence, Retired ID, Insurance, Vehicle Registration etc.
The first thing out of the Clerks mouth was "You're not carrying concealed now are you?"
No, his C.C. permit never left his wallet.
Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Errrr -- Yes I am carrying. Sitting here at home at the computer, I always carry when at home. :neener:

It may be that his DL is noted with his CC permit as it is in NC. Both share the same number......

Bingo. In TX, your DL and CHL are co-reported through certain systems. No matter how many times people tell me it's not so, I used to get CHL notifications all the time pulling up DL information.

When it is someone that can't take me to jail, I just tell them I don't like people to know whether or not I carry.

In MO, it pops up on the cruiser's screen even tho its not on the DL.

Military bases are opposite what we thing would be normal - they aren't gun centric and much of the staff are decidedly "non combat" in their views. Direct applicators of force are not regarded well and many are concerned about them slipping their leash. Independence isn't considered a character trait or part of being the team.

Basically, military posts have become another target rich environment of unarmed individuals, and commanders have gone to excesses in order to impress those under their purvey to be unarmed. It's as if they take it as a personal challenge to discover new ways to make their personnel conform to new restrictions on personal firearms ownership. Some have even gone so far as to require servicemembers living off post to store their firearms on post.

The immediate assumption and (over) reaction by the individual is practically SOP now. And yet, under deployment, soldiers were required to fly with their M16 in their hands on the charter aircraft. I flew more in 2001-2002 with one than without - Egypt, GTMO, Ft. Benning.

We were told not to have any personal firearms in our off post residence at Ft Benning. So, don't ask don't tell was in affect.

There are those on post who take the climate of controlling guns to advantage and who express their personal view rather than be impressed by our Bill of Rights. It's not regarded much in the service - you sign the contract, you have no rights. It's been a losing battle for decades.

Not carrying until I get back to the States. Pistols have been outlawed for years here in Japan. Heck, you can't even carry a knife that has a blade over 2 inches long, since it's classified as a sword.

I am not surprised.

My Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit number is the same as my Tennessee Drivers License number. TDL is plastic with photo and holograms to reveal tampering, ditto THCP except THCP is portrait while the TDL is landscape mode.

The fact I have a THCP is notated in the TDL records when run by LE. There is no need to show THCP with TDL on a traffic stop in Tennessee.

I suspect my tag number check will show that my truck is registered to TDL number xxxxxxxx and TDL number xxxxxxx has a THCP.

I would not be surprised if I drove up the Holston Army Ammunition Plant gate to file a job application and I were asked "You're not carrying now are you?" based on a scan of my truck tag before even being asked to show TDL for ID.

(In THCP class we were advised to keep hands on top of the steering wheel during a traffic stop and make no furtive movements.)

There are four primary reason why I have never had a CWP.

1. I don't want anyone to know I carry or own guns

2. I don't want to be cited for forgetting to carry it on me while wearing

3. In my state we don't need one to carry OC or CC

4. I'm not giving any of my time or money to the government, just so I can reap the benefit of an already established constitutional right.

But on a military base you can be taken to jail....(or just shot ;))

Here in FL your CWL is NOT tied to your DL, in fact it is issued by the Ag Commissioner's office, not the State Patrol and there is no requirement to inform

Almost everywhere, my response is something like "That's a question I choose not to answer." But not at a military base - I am retired military and know how things work. Whether you're carrying or not, refuse to answer and your day will be ruined, guaranteed. Long, long gone are the days when I could walk through the gate of a Navy base in civilian clothes with a pistol on my hip and a rifle in my hand. Actually used to do that when I stored my weapons in the boat's small-arms locker.

In Texas, isn't everybody assumed to be carrying?

Movie, "Miss Congeniality" (2000)

Kathy Morningside:

"Of course he had a gun. This is Texas! Everybody has a gun. My florist has a gun! "

If it's Tuesday I'm carrying, also Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun. In the house, by the pool, even the Dog is carrying.

If looking at CCW/CHLers as a percentage of population, incidence of the carriage of firearms in Texas seems to be much lower than what most folks would seem to assume.

Texas population is around 26 million and has just under 600,000 CHL holders with no unlicensed carry.

By way of comparison, Tennessee, with a population of only approx. 6.5 million has 450,000 CHL licensees.

Interesting.

Not carrying right now. From what I hear it is frowned upon in airports. they also wouldn't like it in Mexico from my undersatanding.
